Visiting Pompeii from Salerno to Rome

We are taking the Trenitalia train from Salerno to Pompeii in July and wanted to go on to Rome after visiting Pompei. Thus far the only available trains take us back to Salerno before going on to Rome. Surely there must be trains that continue on from Pompei to Naples then on to Rome. Have the train schedules not yet been released for July?

The train from Salerno to Pompeii will drop you at the station -- called Pompei with one "i" — for the city of Pompeii, not the archeological site (scavi). The scavi are about a mile away. That stop is on the Circumvesuviana which runs between Naples and Sorrento. To continue on to Rome, the best bet is to ride the Circumvesuviana to Naples and then catch a high-speed train to Rome.

Since you'll have luggage, simply take a taxi from Pompei station to the site where you can check your luggage. After your tour, take the Circumvesuviana to Naples and on to Rome as above.

But no, the July schedule is not complete yet. Schedules update June 10 although the freccia high-speed trains are posted.

There is no direct train service to Rome. The train line that services Pompeii is a private (more or less) commuter line that does not show on most schedule sites. But that doesn't make any difference. There are several an hour, just buy a ticket and get on, no reserve seats. It will dump you on the lower level and hundred yards from the main station - all enclosed. Follow the signs to the main station and go upstairs. Probably just follow the flow of the people.

I am surprised that the Trenitalia site did not reveal any trains from Pompeii (modern city) to Naples. There you would likely transfer to the special Frecciarossa service to Rome (pre-reserved, non-changeable, non-refundable, air-conditioned, new cars) because it is twice as fast for that longer segment of the ride. I have no idea if any of the carriages that pick up in Pompeii (modern city) actually continue to Rome on the slower, conventional Trenitalia trains.

You may wish to use the Search box top center to learn about the Circumvesusivana trains before you decide to use them. They have a reputation (deserved) for being crowded beyond belief, hot, and full of musicians passing the hat. We took it one way to Sorrento, and paid for a car transfer back to Naples!

It is the 15th of June and the only high speed train on July 14th listed from Pompei to Rome is going back to Salerno. Have they not posted the train schedule yet for July?

You have to get a high speed train from Napoli Centrale. as previously discussed, you need to take the Circumvesuviana from Pompei Scavi to Napoli Garibaldi, then walk the 100 meters or so underground to Napoli Centrale. The Circumversuviana trains show up on the Trenitalia trip planner as "Metropolitano".

I see connections to Freccia high speed trains every hour up until 6:16 pm on July 14.

I agree with Sam's report. The service on the modern city of Pompeii main line seems to be called Metropolitano, and is at least hourly. Even on the English version of the Trenitalia website, there is a confusing citation of TWO changes in Naples, when they only mean a walk from one service to the next. Do you understand that if you check your luggage at the modern Pompeii entance to the ancient city, you will not be near the Porta Marina entrance that is across from the Circumvesuviana stop? And that it's a long walk back to the Metropolitano service line?

I suggest that you temporarily select All Trains for Trenitalia website display and not Fast Services, to get a better lay of the land.

Edit: As a practical matter, Frank's (next post) is reasonable. But it is not factually correct. Someone who is sleeping in Salerno, or who prioritized Paestum over Capri, might wish to take the Trenitalia Metropolitano (as distinguished from Circumvesuviana) service from Salerno to modern Pompeii, and from there to Naples and or Rome. However, the nearest entrance (Porta Anfiteatro) to the Scavi ( excavated site that you want to visit ) is over 0.5 mile from the Metropolitano station. I have not made that walk, but you can see it on Google Maps, among other places.

I think you are confused about the train set up. See if I can keep this real simple. Salerno and Sorrento are at opposite ends of the coastal area. Pompeii the archeological site and the city of Pompeii are two completely different sites. The archeological site, Pompeii is ONLY serviced by the Circumvesusivana train. It is a commuter train line only between Sorrento and Naples. (They do not share any stations with the line from Salerno to Sorrento) Therefore, if continuing on to Rome after Pompeii you must take the Circum..... on to Naples and from there a train to Rome. It would make no sense to return to Salerno for the train to Rome. You can take a train from Salerno to the Pompei (one "i") stop and a taxi to the archeological site. There is luggage storage at the entrance to the site. From the Pompeii site, claim your luggage and take the Circu,.... train on to Naples. Don't worry about the schedule between Pompeii site and Naples - it runs frequently, 3 to 4 times an hours.

PS -- We don't want to take the Circumversuviana trains..... In this case you really don't have a choice. Why don't you want to take this train???? It is fine.

Laurel is correct. The train from Salerno stops at the town of Pompeii and not the scavi site. We took that train and made the walk from the station to the scavi. I did a search online about directions. Since you have luggage, I agree that you may want to take a taxi to the station that is closet to the scavi from where the local train (The infamous Circumvesuviana) leaves to take you to Naples where you will get a train to Rome Termini station. I totally understand your feelings about the Circumvesuviana. We had to utilize it once, and it was crazy. There were beggars as well as rowdy teenage boys who jumped on at one stop and off at another, causing a raucous while they were on the train. I had read about the threat of pickpockets on this train not to mention the chance that your luggage runs the risk of being stolen. Indeed, people with luggage secured their bags with bike locks! Since we saw no conductor taking tickets or monitoring behavior, it is open season for the behavior we experienced. Unfortunately, I think that this is your only option from the train station at the scavi to Naples. You will need to investigate what is available. We did a day trip from Salerno and returned the same day. We ultimately took a Fecca train from Salerno to Rome Termini with our luggage and bypassed the Circumvesuviana with bags.

I mean if you WANTED to, you could hike all the way back to the Pompeii station, and take those trains back to Naples....I don't know how there aren't ANY trains that don't stop at that station and continue onto Naples.....

Could you be looking at JUST the fast trains? There is a chance that there MIGHT be a better solution to get to Salerno to get to a fast train that might not stop in Pompeii? But that also seems weird.....
