I have a free day/night between Trieste and Lake Como. I was thinking of going to Verona. Will likely have a rental car. Thoughts? Is Verona worth an overnight stopover?
Verona is lovely. We enjoyed 3 nights there.
Here is a recent thread with some parking/hotel advice

Verona is definitely worth the day/night. Don't bother with the Romeo/Juliet balcony sight, btw. It's a lovely city with lots of charm in my opinion. We stay in hotel Giuliette e Romeo which is a great location but not sure what they do about parking, lovely rooms and nice breakfast. Enjoy
Heading ##Hello,
I loved Verona- I think it is a great place to stay overnight- lots to see and do with great restaurants and shopping! And I DISagree with the post above- DO go to Juliets balcony- rub the statue for luck, and put a letter in the wall! Or write to Juliet (aka the movie Letters to Juliet) and you will get an answer provided you give your address)
We loved Verona! This past May we spent 2 nights in Verona, and I wish we had an extra night. We also stayed at Hotel Giulietta e Romeo. It's in an excellent location; we had a huge room and huge bathroom in a separate building from the main building. Just 2 buildings down. The hot and cold breakfast buffet is one of the best we had on our trip.
One of our highlights for sightseeing is Castelvecchio, a fortress/castle that now houses Verona's premier art museum. What is really cool about this art museum is that it also includes a walk along the castle ramparts. The museum is a comfortable size; it's not overwhelming. There is also the Roman Arena, Duomo, and interesting and lively piazzas and neighborhoods to wander through.
You will wish you have an extra night or two! But one night is better than not visiting Verona at all.
I like Verona; it was our first city we stayed in pre-RS 17-day Best of Italy tour back in 2006. I have stayed there a couple of times within the last ten years. I like Hotel Bologna which is just off of Piazza Bra where the Roman Arena is located. Actually I will be staying there again in a few weeks, bringing an adult daughter.
The hotel prices jump during the opera season, but if you’re interested in attending an opera, it’s amazing to do it at the outdoor arena!
Activities: I liked a city bike tour which is a fun way to learn about the history and see a lot. I’ve also participated in a cooking class and will do another one in September. There’s a Verona Card that gives you access to several sites including the castle museum for one price. And, yes, I do recommend going into the Juliet courtyard for fun, but do it towards evening when it is illuminated and not as busy. There’s nice piazzas - Piazza Bra, Piazza Erbe, etc. Check activities schedules at the arena - we’re going to attend a music concert.
I was in Verona in early August (this year) and stayed at Hotel Bologna. I highly recommend. We did go to the opera, so stayed 2 nights. Still, we had extra time, so we took a bus to Bardolino on Lake Garda, for a wonderful waterfront lunch.
Verona was my favourite city in Italy. (Rome, Florence, and Vienna were the others we spent overnights in.)
