Venice ferries

Do the tickets for the ferries in Venice need to be purchased in advance, or can they be purchased right at the port? We are getting off the metro at the St. Lucia station and need to get to S. Angelo. I noticed that we could walk from St. Lucia to St. Toma DX, too, and then take a shorter ferry to S. Angelo. I couldn’t find information on this ferry, though. So, would just be best to take a ferry from Ferrovia to S. Angelo? I know that Venice was a city on the water, but didn’t realize until just now (a day before our scheduled tour) that we would have to take a ferry just to get to our departure point, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

No need to buy vaporetto tickets in advance. When you exit the train station (there is no metro), you will see a ticket booth out front, as well as several vaporetto docks. Buy your ticket and board the appropriate vaporetto. It is absolutely important that you validate your ticket in the machine at the entrance to the vaporetto.

If you want to do a bit of research, (highly recommended), have a look here: https://europeforvisitors.com/venice/mobile/articles/venice-vaporetto-traveling.htm

There's absolutely no need to buy advance tickets for the Vaporetti, and no price break for doing so. When you walk down the steps of Venezia Santa Lucia, look to the left. As I recall there's a ticket booth there.

As mentioned in a previous reply, it's very important to validate your ticket prior to boarding the Vaporetto. Failure to do that will result in hefty fines, which are usually collected on the spot! Validation is electronic, so just hold the ticket against the reader. If you get a green light, you're good to go.

The boats are not ferries, but they act as the bus system for Venice.
They are called vaporetti, and are lots of fun to ride on!
If you look online , you will find a schematic/map of all the routes and can plan which boat to get to your hotel.
Do you know about all the bridges in Venice?
You may have to walk up and down them with your luggage, so pack light.
You might want to look closely at this website, to avoid any surprises in Venice.
