Venice Ferries

Do the tickets for the ferries in Venice need to be purchased in advance, or can they be purchased right at the port? We are getting off the metro at the St. Lucia station and need to get to S. Angelo. I noticed that we could walk from St. Lucia to St. Toma DX, too, and then take a shorter ferry to S. Angelo. I couldn’t find information on this ferry, though. So, would just be best to take a ferry from Ferrovia to S. Angelo? I know that Venice was a city on the water, but didn’t realize until just now (a day before our scheduled tour) that we would have to take a ferry just to get to our departure point, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

OK- they are called Vaporettos or water buses. There is no metro so I assume you mean train.

Yes you will want to purchase your vaporetto pass on arrival- get a length of stay pass. Each individual ride is 7.50 euros, so a pass is real money saver. You really can't walk from train to San Toma without crossing multiple bridges/canals and steps- it is on opposite side of grand canal. Sant' Angelo is on same side as train station. It's a very short distance- but is not a distance you want to walk with luggage- so easy to get lost and the bridges/steps will kill you!

I assume you will have luggage?

Get your pass at the TI kiosk just outside of train station it is almost directly in front of you. Then go to Vaporetto #1- that will stop at Sant' Angelo (8th stop from train station)- it is the vap dock all the way to the right if you have your back to the train station (The 'D' dock I believe).
VALIDATE your pass each and every time you use it- they will fine you on the spot if not done. The validation machines are just as you enter the waiting dock- just pass your ticket in front of it til it beeps.

You might also want to check with your lodgings to get very specific walking directions from the vaporetto to hotel.

The "metro" at Santa Lucia? That is truly a mainline train station. By ferries, I think you mean the boat buses, usually referred to vaporetti, go all over and very frequently. It is the city transit system of Venice.

From Ferrovia, take the No 1 Vaporetto to Sant'Angelo. It goes every 12 minutes, taking 24 minutes, and a single ticket is 7.50 EUR. You can buy a ticket at the ticket windows along the dock or out of a ticket vending machine with a credit card. You scan the ticket as you walk onto the floating dock. There are several docks in front of the station. You go to the right to get to the "E" dock. It will be marked with a "1" with a circle around it and say "direction Lido".

If you will be in Venice for a while, you can also buy a 24 hour ticket for 20 EUR, or a 48 hour ticket for 30 EUR, or a 72 hour ticket for 40 EUR, or a 7-day ticket for 60 EUR.

Yes, I meant train. Very useful information, however, you say go to Vaporetto #1, but I only see Ferrovia ports on the map. Is Ferrovia just a port at Vaporetto station?
Thank you!

“Ferrovia” is train station

There are multiple vaporetto docks in front of station
The dock you want is for the “Lignea 1” all the way to the right
It will be clearly marked as described above.

Apologies everyone for accidentally saying metro instead of train.... It is clear what I meant.

Ferrovia is the name of the vaporetto stop in front of the train station. "Ferro" = Italian word for iron, "Via" = Italian word for road. Iron road = railroad.

PS. Seems like you have made it safe and sound to you lodgings in Milan after a long and stressful journey. Changing your name from ulfsaxa12 is a bit confusing.
