My wife and I will be traveling from Umbria to Sorrento late in June. Would it be best to rent a car or to take the train. Also, thinking of exploring the Amalfi coast with a private tour (Amalfi, Positano & Ravello) - Does anyone have any experience or can recommend a private tour service. Thanks
From where in Umbria?
Train to Naples then on to Sorrento is probably best choice. Really no need for the expensive headache a car will be.
There is lots of info here on forum about your transit options once in Naples.
( Circumvesuviana, Campania Express or private driver)
Do a few searches and you’ll find links to all those options
Take a look at Mondo Guides www.sharedtours.com
We used them for Capri and Pompeii and were very pleased.
We used this company for transfers from Naples to Sorrento and Sorrento to Amalfi. Highly recommend
No earthly reason to drive, especially with high rental costs, high gas costs, and high season. Could train from Orvieto or many other places. Have you travelled by train in Europe before? See our host's site, as in https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips (blue menu top left of desktop site.)
It's not clear whether you mean "car and driver" or "organized van tour". Here's one answer:

I also suggest the search box top center, although you'll have to filter out tours that start in Rome (which are not generally recommended!) Try "Amalfi Coast tours" or "Sorrento tours"
We are going in the opposite direction in June. The trains aren't loaded yet, but the same trip a few weeks before we want to go has a direct Intercity train from Naples to Orvieto in the early afternoon. It takes about the same amount of time as the fast train since you don't have to change in Rome. Plus it is much cheaper, even if we get first class.
We are using a driver to drop us at the Naples Station.
