Umbria - Spello recommendations

We are staying 3 nights in Spello in October and renting a car. Looking for recommendations of day trips, hikes, towns to visit. Restaurants and experience
Thanks

I would definitely put Assisi on your list for day trips. Except for Assisi, I haven't visited Trevi or any of the other towns already mentioned.

Look for a book called Il Bel Centro, by Michelle Damiani.
It might only be an ebook, I don't know; but it is her account of a year living in Spello with her family.
A great read even if you aren't going there!
She put it on the now defunct SlowTrav Italy forum a few years back as she was writing it as a diary.
I believe she has a blog too.

Assisi and Spello for sure. I had a wonderful "passagiata" experience around sunset in Spello. On old man got to talking with me (I speak a little Italian) and he put my hand to his chest where I could feel a pace-maker box, and he said "I am MADE IN AMERICA! ... Boston, Massachusetts!" It was so funny! Also in Spello, as you come up the main street, there are restaurants on the right that have an enjoyable view of the valley below.

Montefalco is close too. When I visited in April, it had that sleepy town feeling. Very quiet and non-touristy. The main square has a cafe and a wine shop and there is a pleasant look-out area just before you drive right into town.

The places mentioned, all close by. As you have a car, look into Norcia as well, a beautiful little place.

Assisi at sunset is hard to beat.

Coincidentally, I started reading that book last night; it's quite good. I am jealous that you are going to Spello. It was on my list last year but sadly we never made it there. Saw many other interesting towns but not Spello. I guess I'll have to return to Italy so I can check it off my list...darn! LOL.

im really excited to go there. We have included a few small towns sprinkled between the major, busy cities. We might need the downtime and never venture far out of Spello :)

I was given a copy of the book by the owner of a shop which is mentioned by the author. Good read! We loved staying two weeks in Spello. Great selections of restaurants. Views to Assisi across the valley.
Perfect location for exploring the area.
