Train from Rome to Salerno

Traveling as a family (2 adults, 12 and 14 year old boys) from Rome to Salerno. I would like a high speed train, but am not seeing them. Is it too early? If so, when would I expect to see the schedule for June? Also, it appears there are a few train stations in Salerno. I am staying near the port. What can you recommend? Thanks so much!

Just look at a date before June 13 and you'll get prices. Just use "Salerno" as the station. use local transport to get to your lodging from there. I see the Bimibi Gratis (kids under 15 ride free) price is 106 EUR with 2 adults. It is not the lowest price available, which is Super Economy, but that will have to be booked early and is completely nonrefundable.

We used Italo for a train to Salerno last May. The station is centrally located and not too far to the port so you can probably walk it. We stayed at the La Tartaruga B&B on Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi. Train tickets are usually available 120 days in advance except when the schedule changes! Once you are inside 120 days, check at least weekly as they load schedules into the calendar starting with the high speed trains. More train info can be found here:

Thank you. So, I can assume the kids (12 and 14) are bambino gratis, right? Thanks again.

When I was purchasing Frecciarossa tickets from Rome to Salerno a few years ago, they did not become available until about 4 months ahead of travel. Keep checking. The direct Frecca Train will take you to Salerno's main train station near the port.

Bimbi Gratis is a special class of ticket where adults pay full price and children are free. Here is a description of the offer.
https://www.trenitalia.com/en/offers/bimbi_gratis.html

Generally children under 4 are free, and children 4 to 14 are half price. The cheapest tickets are almost always Super Economy tickets, but there are a limited number offered on every train, and when they sell out, they are gone. That could be early in the sales period. They are also completely nonrefundable.

Read the details of the Bimbi Gratis and you will see that they a changeable up to 2 days before departure, and can be refunded before departure for a 20% fee. So Bimbi Gratis tickets should still be available until long after the Super Economy tickets are sold out, and will still be cheaper than Economy tickets, the next discount level.

You could also check out the intercity trains.
One at 9:26, IC# 551, cost, 12,90€.
Another at 11:26. IC# 727, cost, 14,90€.
While these take about 45min. longer they're less expensive then the Freccirosso trains super economy fares.

I just realized that there is a train from Trastevere to Salerno. Yay! So I'm going to look at that one. One quick question about buying the tickets. Since the kids are Bimibi gratis, do I put them in as children? I'm assuming yes, but don't want to make a mistake. And I should consider Frecce trains national, correct? Thanks so much!

What site are you using ? I couldn't find any direct trains from Roma Trastevere to Salerno.

Trenitalia. Not direct, we would have to transfer at Termini. But that's okay with me.

Well, ok, with a transfer at Termini there is a train to Salerno from anywhere in Italy! Depending on where you are staying in Trastevere, a bus to Termini may be faster and involve less walking with luggage in tow.
