For 55 euros you could do the highly recommended Mondo guide tour

While the city tour seems less expensive and is a good way to travel, if you want more extensive info, not really as good of a deal as it sounds. It's 10€ for Sorrento-Positano then 6€ to Amalfi on the way back Amalfi-Positano another 6€ and Positano-Sorrento 6€.

If you want something more than just transport, then Mondo Tours recommend by Christine is a much better option.

I thought the €10 option was going to be low end.

Honestly, I like to wander on my own, but I'm not opposed to a tour.

Has anyone rented a car and driven the coast as opposed to a tour?

Driving the coast yourself would be a nightmare
The road is narrow windy crowded
You’d not be able to look at views and enjoy yourself at all
Finding parking in any of the towns would be a miracle

wpayos, I haven't taken one personally but the shared Mondo tours have been seeing positive reviews and recommendations for some time now. Just throwing "Mondo Tours" into the search function, here's just a sample of what turns up:

When it has come up before, consensus on the car question has largely been "Don't even think about it" for the A.C. during high season. Traffic, parking and Sorrento ZTLs can be a collective headache.
