We are traveling to Milan in September and would like to see "The Last Supper". How far ahead can tickets be purchased through their website? Would we be better off booking a Milan walking tour that included the tickets? We are only going to be there for one day but it is at the beginning of a month in Italy.

Currently, they seem to go on sale on pretty short notice for the next calendar month. See the ongoing discussion at https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/last-supper-tickets-on-official-site-suspended. It may all be back to "normal" before September.
Instead of purchasing a tour you may not really want, you can probably find tickets from a broker; I paid $16 for a ticket, much less than a tour. Brokers also seem to have tickets available further in advance.
Do you have any brokers that you could recommend?
Because of all the difficulties of getting tickets we finally gave up and booked a Best of Milan tour with Walks of Italy which includes Last Supper, Duomo and other sights. We love their tours so I know it will be very worth the cost.
I use Select Italy when I need to go through a broker.
