Last Supper Tickets on official site suspended

I have been checking for tickets to be released for May 10, 2016, but the official website says that "The opening sale day for the month of May 2016 has been postponed for organizational reasons of the Museum. We will publish the new date as soon as possible." Has this happened to anyone before? Should I wait? Should I buy tickets from a more expensive 3rd party? When we were in Milan before we didn't see "The Last Supper", so we think we would really like to try and see it this time. However, doing so would cost us a night's stay (out of 3) in Sienna in an agriturismo that we are very much excited about. We are flying out of Milan after a 3 week tour of Italy and are trying to decide whether to wait and see what the official site does or change to another option, and we don't want to wait too long on the official site that we loose an opportunity of buying 3rd party tickets. What is a 'good price' for tickets from a 3rd party? Would you advise taking the English guided tour? Also, we are still waffling on whether or not to spend the night in Milan and see the Last Supper or stay an extra night in Sienna. Thoughts? Help? Advice?

I would wait. As long as the site will be open in May, which we assume that it will, the tickets will eventually become available through the official source. If an outside vendor sells them to you now, it must be on the same speculation, that they believe it will be open. But if it ended up being closed, having pre-purchased would not help you. (With train tickets, for instance, it's a common scenario that ticket sales are delayed if they are working on issues of finalizing a schedule, track maintenance, etc.)

I would check a broker site to see if they are selling tickets for the dates you want - if the room is actually closed, no one will sell tickets.

I use Select Italy, which charges a markup but it's not terrible - I think I paid $15 or $20 the last time (two years ago).

Coincidentally, that is the same day that I have been waiting to buy tickets for. I'm still hopeful that they will release them, as I have found private tour companies offering tickets for that same day. But I admit this delay is a little odd.

Thanks for the advice, I have also been waiting to get tickets for the Last Supper but on 5/12.

Note that the Last Supper is in poor condition, if that affects your decision. I know what you are feeling, however, as it was on my bucket list as well.

I've also been trying to get tickets for April but now I can't even find the Last Supper on the site at all as an option.

Alternatives? I feel like this is something I SHOULD see but not if it costs a fortune. Milan is essentially just our arrival and departure city, in general I haven't found much interest in anything other than the Last Supper and the Duomo in the center of the city.

Did anyone successfully get the tickets of May sale by phone already??
I tried to call to check whether May ticket sales are actually postponed or just for tickets order online...
However, no one answered the call.

sly ingenious, are you accounting for the time difference when calling?

When I called direct for Last Supper reservations, I first checked their office hours and then called accounting for time difference, It took 7 attempts before I got through. I'm so thankful I did as the website said they were SOLD OUT and I was able to get two tickets for the only tour time left for the day.

For those of you who were able to get tickets by phone, would you please clarify if those tickets were for May? Thank you.

I just checked Select Italy, my go-to for tickets, and there are some available for May 4 and then for May 25, nothing in between. This is highly unusual. Nothing for May 10. Tickets are $16.00 each. Apparently there is some reorganization going on.

Thanks Zoe. I am still trying by phone, but keep getting a message saying that the phone is not working/disconnected. It's in Italian, but this is what I understand it to say. Has anyone else tried the phone number recently. I have allowed for the time difference and am calling during their office hours, but I just can't get through. I might just have to stay an extra night in Tuscany at this point, and save the Last Supper for another visit.

Denise....I've also been trying to get tickets for June. Called the number early this morning (California time) and got a message that gave phone hours of operation and gave the website for "further information" and then it hangs up on you. I tried several times....same thing. I've got a bit of time still, so I'm going to keep trying. I also sent an email to the church from their website (I like to explore any avenue I can)....not really expecting to hear back, but I thought I would give it a shot. Keep me posted if you have success and I'll do the same.......Beth

Sounds good, Beth. I will let you know if/when I hear anything or get anyone or find out about the tickets.

I actually got through to an operator this morning!......however, she told me that they could only sell tickets through April at this point and she had no information as to when more tickets would become available......ugh! I plan to continue calling on a weekly basis for my June tickets. If I were looking for May tickets, I would probably be calling daily. Such a frustrating system!!

Beth,

Thanks for the update. I'm going to start calling for tickets in early June. Would you share the phone number you are using?

Thanks again,

Sharon

In my mind, the purpose of calling is to get those few cancellations that can become available after the web site says "sold out." Currently, the booking site shows that tickets are for sale just through April 30. I would keep an eye on that note before making a phone call, since I would not expect phone bookings to be released any earlier than online bookings. Here are the directions from p. 317 of Rick Steves' Italy:

From the US dial 011-39-02-9280-0360, office open Mon-Sat 8:00-18:30, closed Sun; the number is often busy--once you get through, select 2 for an English-speaking operator).

It has been my impression from many posts on this forum that calling is the preferred method since many people have reported getting tickets on dates that showed "sold out" on the website. I used the number that Laura listed and called back 3 times (the recorded message eventually hangs up on you on most tries) before someone answered this morning. My plan is to look at both the website for any updates, as well as call frequently for my June tickets. I would love to take my family to see this painting since it is one of the most recognized pieces of art from Italy and I have the time and willingness to make the effort. But, if I don't succussfully get the tickets, it won't ruin our month long trip to Italy. If any of you get further updates, I'm sure others besides me would love to have you post them!

I also, have been trying to get tickets for either May 13 the or 14th on the official website. I decided today to bite the bullet and book through a third party for a walking tour of Milan and the Last Supper. The two tours that Rick recommends were sold out for those days. I booked through another company I have seen recommended here (Tickititalia), and got 2 of the 5 last tickets for 48 euros each.

Has anybody been successful in buying tickets for May (via viva-ticket)? I see the site was updated/opened for May sales, and now there are "no seats available"? In addition, when I call the phone number, I get a recording......"you have dialed a secure number". What am I missing; or what am I doing wrong? Thanks for any assistance.
