I've always loved the Streetwise line of foldable, laminated maps. They're durable, easy to use and slip into my back pocket with no fuss or complex refolding. So when we started planning our Venice-Florence-Rome tour for next May, I naturally wanted maps for each city. That's when I discovered the company has apparently gone out of business and the supply of maps is dwindling. Rome is still pretty available, and I found one for Florence on an auction site for just a couple of dollars above the sticker price.
But the Venice map has been a white whale. If you look on Amazon or other online booksellers, they'll show ridiculous prices -- $60 to more than $100 for a $7.95 map. I've scoured all over the web and had no luck. I "bought" one from an online seller who claimed to have one but, in fact, did not. I had even thought of putting out an appeal on this forum to see if anyone had a map they'd part with for a reasonable price.
This morning, I was at our local Barnes and Noble store to pick up a few gifts. The store was one of the first places I'd checked months ago, to no avail, when I realized these maps were disappearing. I was browsing in the travel section, naturally, and, mostly out of habit, scanned the display of international maps. Wonder of wonders, there it was, a single Streetwise Venice map, calling to me for the $7.95 list price. Why? How? I have no idea, but I snatched it up, of course.
Yes, I realize that, of the three cities we'll be visiting, Venice is the one where we'd likely do fine without a map, as part of the charm, supposedly, is letting yourself get lost. Still, it had become a quest, and I now feel a sense of completeness.
Ciao and Merry Christmas!
