Looking for recommendations for staying IN Pompei. We have a kid with a special a special interest in Pompeii, Herculaneum, & Mt. Vesuvius. We want the flexibility to go return the the sites in the more than ones if we wish.
Also, just cause thought it would be nice to stay in Pompei with views.of Mt. Vesuvius. Really the whole trip is cause kid has been asking to go see Pompeii for 7 years after seeing a documentary at 3-4 years old.
Rome and Naples are just in addition if we can make the time over our 10ish days there. I know we should probably plan to hit the Museum in Naples as well. But the train from Naples might be too much of our day if we want to go multiple time or spend multiple dya it tha area.
Anyway any recommendations in Pompei??
If you go to booking.com you will find a few places in the modern town of Pompeii surrounding the archeological site.
Sorry, I can't help with specific places.
Just to Clarify—. When Pompeii refers to the Roman ruins at the archaeological park, it’s spelled with two “i” letters. The suburban city of “Pompei” is spelled with just one “i.”
I remember this by thinking I might want to see Pompeii a couple times with my own two eyes!
Timewise, ERCOLANO (“Herculaneum”) is just a fraction of the size of Pompeii and can be seen in 1-2 hours. The National Archaeological Museum of Naples with artifacts from both Pompeii and Herculaneum is about 40 minutes from Herculaneum by train. A Metro line travels the final mile directly from the train station in Naples to the museum. Both Herculaneum and the National Archaeological Museum make for a great daytrip.
We spent several nights in Pompei in April 2022, and really loved it. Our hotel was across the street from the Anfiteatro entrance to Pompeii, and our room had a great view of Mt. Vesuvius. The area around the more popular Marina entrance is much more congested, and I think some people make their negative assumptions about the entire town based on that brief exposure.
We spent an entire day at Pompeii, another day at Ercolano, Oplontis, and Stabiae, and went to the Archeology Museum in Naples as a day trip from Pompei. In hindsight, I wish we had spent an extra day at Pompeii instead of going to the museum.
There is no shortage of great restaurants in Pompei. I don't get all the negativity about what I found to be a lovely place.
Here are links to our hotel and favorite restaurant.
I think it mostly comes down to the fact that one of the most exciting cities in Italy is on one side, and one of the most beautiful coastlines in Italy is on the other side. Most people will choose one of those and see Pompeii as a day trip. That is what I did, but we easily could have returned to Pompeii for a second visit if we wanted to (and we spent the better part of a day there).
So, it really just depends on what you are looking for. Pompei may not be dire (I did not find the town to be super appealing), but you can easily get to the site from nearby places, which then give you so many other options for things to do.
With ten days, you should spend at least half in the area to see all of the associated places and the archaeology museum.
We spent a night in Pompei in 2017 so we could enter when the site opened in the morning. I can’t remember where we stayed, but I do recall that many restaurants were booked and we had trouble finding one that could seat us when we arrived early evening. So consider reserving ahead for your first evening.
I am so glad that Estimated Prophet has a recent recommendation for the Hotel Forum --- we stayed there for two nights in July 2001 with our 9-year-old son and my mother, but I would have hesitated to offer such an ancient recommendation. It was great to be able to walk across the street to the entrance first thing in the morning when it was cooler and less crowded, and to be able to return quickly to the hotel when we got hot and cranky. We went to Herculaneum the next morning.
It was many years later before we made it to the museum in Naples, but it really is spectacular and well worth going to some extra trouble to get there. Perhaps you can see Pompeii on two mornings and then the museum one afternoon after lunch and a rest --- it's open until 6:30pm.
Someone mentioned Booking.com, that would be a good start, but rather than stay in the modern city of Pompei, I would look for something within short distance of one of the stops on the Circumvesuvia line. That would give you better transportation options to Pompeii, as well as Herculaneum. It also gets you into Naples for the museum, and to Sorrento if you wish. While the modern city does have decent train connections to Naples and Salerno, transport to the ancient site, and to points along the coast are not so good.
I'll disagree as regards the Circumvesuviana (CV) trains. I found service to be superior on the Trenitalia lines and stations. Trains are faster and more comfortable than the CV trains IMO, and schedules are more convenient. You might need to walk a little farther to get to the historic sites, but not a lot. We stayed in Naples, near the Montesanto station, and it was easy and quick to use Trenitalia to get to Pompei. No way I'd stay in Pompei. But each to his own.
I believe the two railway systems use different rail gauges. Riding the CV is an experience, I have to admit. Not necessarily a good one.
We stayed at this lovely apartment in Pompei for 4 nights in December 2022: Casa Cantoniera Guest House We really enjoyed it. It is walkable to the Pompeii excavation site, although it is a good 20 minute walk I think. We did it several times and didn't find it a chore. We also took the train to Herculaneum, Naples (for the Archaeological Museum) and Salerno (for the Christmas lights). It was all easy and convenient. The train station is maybe a 10-minute walk from the apartment. We had some good meals and also were able to eat at "home" or at least carry pizzas home when we didn't want to sit through a dinner out. I think staying in Pompei is a fine idea, especially if the various ruins are your priority.
FYI, Note that same day re-entry on the same ticket is not available. The 5-Site ticket only allows once at each of the five. I noticed two urban hotels near the Porta Marina entrance of Pompeii Scavi, but not a lot of dining options. You need transport to the other 4 sites, including the Circumvesiviana option. Herculaneum is 15 minutes downhill from the Circumvesuviana.
EDIT: However, note this recent post here that you may want to investigate for your specific needs:

BTW, Vesuvius is visible from many places in the area, including our (extra cost) waterfront hotel room window in Sorrento.
