Hello,
I will be attending a nephew’s wedding in Tuscany in mid June, near Siena. I plan to spend about 3 weeks traveling in Italy prior to the wedding, I have been to northern Italy several times, though there are several places I have not been to . ( Perugia and Assisi to name a couple). I would most likely fly in and out of Rome, although I haven’t booked my flight yet. I could take a train from there to. Lecce which I think is about five hours direct. And spend a few days there and perhaps a couple of other towns in the heel of the boot before needing to head back north for the wedding. I don’t plan to rent a car so I was hoping to do most of the travel by train. It seems a bit far to get all the way back to sienna for the wedding so I’m debating whether this is worth it or if I should just stick to Tuscany and other parts of Northern Italy that I have not yet visited. I’d appreciate any advice from somebody who has done a similar trip.
Have you been to Bologna? That’s closer to Siena than Lecce, and definitely worth including in a more northerly itinerary.
This past fall, we spent about 3 weeks in Puglia, including in Lecce, and saw a lot. We did have a car, but ultimately took a train from Bari to Naples before our flight out of Italy.
Hi,
Puglia details. I stayed in several Puglia cities during these two trips - all by train or the occasional bus:

Or, if you decide to stay more in the norther region, these are less touristy other than Venice:
