Will be in Sicily in October. Want to day trip to Valleta, Malta. How doable is that.

I think you'll find ferries far too costly for a day trip. They might also be too slow, though I haven't looked at the schedules recently.
I think flights are more affordable if you purchase your tickets early. Check skyscanner.com. Now, whether the flights are scheduled in such a way that you'll actually have some time in Malta before you have to head back to the airport, I do not know.
How much time do you have in Sicily? It has many and varied destinations that take weeks to see.

Gary - to find all the threads you've posted on (whether you or someone else started them), click on your name, and you'll see the option to "View Topics Gary Has Participated In". By doing that, I was able to find your other thread quickly:
