Will be in Sicily in October. Is it feasible to day trip to Valleta, Malta by ferry?
It depends where in Sicily and how long the ferry takes and if there is a morning ferry there and evening ferry back.
Although it's feasible (I believe the ferry is 1.5 hours each way or so), it may not be worthwhile due to logistical challenges. Unfortunately, the ferry from Sicily departs a small town called Pozzalo all the way at the tip of the island, which is not near any place in Sicily you're likely to be beforehand. If the ferry leaves Sicily very early in the morning, then you'd have to factor in spending the night somewhere in Pozzalo beforehand. So, in other words, you'd have to be pretty motivated to go and bake it into your trip plan. It's much easier to take a very short 40 minute flight from Catania, but obviously not for 1 day. I realized this when I also considered the ferry option. The ferry line is called Virtu ferries (http://www.virtuferries.com) so you can look at the schedule and run through the logistics and then decide if it's worth it to you when the time comes.
Is there any way you can spend more than just a day in Malta? Valetta really has a lot to see in a compact space, and the rest of Malta is really interesting as well. I spent about 5 full days in Malta and 4 full days in (southeastern) Sicily on my trip, and obviously I shortchanged both.
Thank you everyone. We have rented a house near Taormina. Will check out Air Malta from Catania.
