September 10 - 19 Emilia Romagna / Bologna

We are returning to Italy this fall and have booked all of our travel except for September 10-19. We travel well (late 50's and late 60's), although one of us has a bad knee. Steps can be done, but we are strategic--making sure we can take breaks etc. We are not climbing bell towers, but generally handle hills well.

We are very food oriented people and really appreciate the fresh ingredients and cuisines of the various regions of Italy, both in the restaurants and the markets. Our approach to travel, especially in Italy, is to have something "scheduled" every other day; we like getting up and exploring our location wandering around taking in the beauty of the place, its history, its food and its people.

Emilia Romagna is really piquing our interest...Bologna, Modena, Parma, Ravenna. We would prefer to travel between cities using trains, and within cities we are fine with public transportation or taxis.

So, here is my long list of questions/request for guidance. We are looking at Bologna as a base for part of the 9 days. For those that have been to Bologna have you used it as a base for Parma, Modena or Ravenna? Did it work well for you; why or why not?

Hotel recommendations...$200ish/night (or less) with air con and private connected bath. If more than two floors of steps, an elevator is needed.

Also, we are considering splitting the nine days between two places and are open to suggestions; including a few nights in an agritourismo, which we know would likely involve renting a car. I just do not want to be dealing with a car rental and parking in a city...

Thanks in advance for any guidance or suggestions.

I have stayed in both Bologna and Parma on 2 separate trips. Enjoyed both.
In Bologna, we just stayed there, and ate, and ate, and ate...
In Parma we took one of those food tours that go to a Parmigiano Cheese making facility, a Parma Ham facility, and a Balsamic Vinegar facility, along with lunch at a winery.
With 9 days, you have plenty of time for both, and can do day trips to the other places you mentioned.
I don't have a hotel recommendation as we stay in AirBnB's.

We have spent 5 nights in Bologna on 2 of our 3 recent trips to Italy. We love that city; it has so many interesting sights and quirky little museums, and is great for walking because of the porticoes. The one daytrip we did was to Ravenna, an easy 1 hour 17 minutes away by direct train.

We have not been to Modena or Parma yet, but we will be spending 2 nights in Modena in September. It seems to be a very; “business-oriented” city and I had trouble finding a reasonably-priced hotel that appealed to us, but did eventually choose what appears to a nice little boutique bed and breakfast inn in the oldtown area.

Both Modena and Parma could be daytrips from Bologna; Modena is only 17-22 minutes away, with Parma a bit further (50-60 minutes). But personally, I would tire of doing all those daytrips from Bologna; just getting back and forth to the train station (which is my least favorite station in italy) would wear me out.

So if it were my trip, I would split it; staying 4-5 nights in Bologna and visiting Ravenna on a daytrip, then the other 2-3 nights in either Parma or Modena.

Another option would involve a town you didn’t mention, but we like it a lot: Ferrara. You could spend 4 nights in Bologna, visiting Modena and/or Ferrara on a daytrip from there, then move to Ferrara for 3 nights an make your daytrip to Ravenna from there (travel time to Ravenna is the same as it is from Bologna). Ferrara is a UNESCO world heritage site but less-visited by tourists than Bologna.

The city is flat, good for bicycles and easily walkable.

I cannot suggest a hotel for Bologna (we stay in apartments there), but one of our favorite hotels in italy is in Ferrara. It is a small family-owned and operated hotel, across a quiet little square from the castle, and adjacent to the main town piazza and pedestrian zone.

Bologna is one of the most important Italian train hub, so for day trips by train is a perfect solution: is the center of a star shaped railways who go in every direction. Ravenna, Ferrara, Modena, Rimini, Parma are very easy day trips.
Of course with 9 days could be possible even split your staying in two different places: usually are Bologna and Parma.
Modena is UNESCO World Heritage too, but being so close to Bologna the most of tourists prefer to sleep in that city (that is very industrialized and business oriented too): is the reason why along years few hotels opened in Modena and mostly for business tourism. In any case Modena is a rich city with high level restaurants and things to do.
As hotel facilities, if you choose a 4* air conditioner, elevator and bath ion the room are mandatory, but is even true for the most of 3* hotels, so don't worry about it. In Bologna you can choose an hotel not far from the train station, so is a short walk for daily tours: the most are more business oriented, but are very good and with all comfort.
Don't worry about towers: some ones can be visited, but are not so important visits to be done.
The idea to rent a car is good, even because in the countryside and hillside is plenty of food producers, castles, fortresses, parks that worth to be visited. Of course you must deal with traffic and Emilia-Romagna is a nightmare everywhere (not only in cities). But with patience and calm can be a very nice experience.

We've stayed in Bologna three times in recent years, using it as a base for all the places you mention plus others -- Ravenna, Modena, Ferrara, Parma, Padua. All by train; never have rented a car.

Personally, I think you could easily spend 9 days in Bologna and not tire of it. Between what's in the city and what's accessible by train, it is a great hub. Others may think 9 days is too much and wastes an opportunity to reach into other areas; however, I'm all about unpacking once and burrowing into a city!

Ultimately it comes down to personal preferences for how you want to travel....

I've based in Bologna and Parma on the same journey. Suited me rather well. Parma is a lovely city that deserves more than a day visit.

The first time I went to Ravenna, I day-tripped there from Bologna. That didn't give me enough time in Ravenna, just enough to get to the top 6 or 7 mosaic sites, including St. Apollinaire in Classe. I admit to not being an early starter, so someone else could take that day trip and have more time in Ravenna. But I was a lot happier in 2022 when I spent 3 nights in Ravenna (arriving quite late, so just two full days) and could overdose on mosaics as well as going to the art museum (which usually has a contemporary-mosaic exhibition) and wandering around the historic center.

I do like Bologna. It's quite a business destination, so if you can finagle your schedule to maximize weekend days rather than weekdays in the city, you might lower your hotel costs a good bit.
