Seeking Input on October Trip! (Zurich - Bernina Express - Milan - Florence?)

I'm traveling for work in mid-October, and after the conference ends on a Friday, I'm taking the following week off, so I'll have eight days until I fly home. I'm starting from Frankfurt, and departing from Milan, so I decided I want to take the train through Switzerland to Italy. I'll probably be a bit tired after the work trip part, so I'm looking forward to a relaxed solo trip (I love meandering, eating, reading on the train, eating some more, visiting a museum or two etc) and am trying to be more chill than my usual method of squeezing in as much to see and do as possible! I've solo travelled a lot before, but have never been to Italy nor Switzerland before, and am in my late twenties.

That being said, I'd love some input on how many days to spend in each place, and if my planned itinerary sounds doable. So far, I have only booked the first two nights in Zurich (I'll take the four hour train Saturday am, and stay Sat-Sun, eat my weight in chocolate, etc). I'm thinking of taking the train from Zurich to Chur on Monday am, taking the 4.5 hour Bernina Express to Tirano, having lunch there and moving on to Milan (2ish hours by train).

This is where I'm unsure with what to do between Monday evening and Saturday morning -- should I stay in Milan for a couple of nights now, or go straight on to Florence (another 2 hour train) for the whole 5 days? Will I wish I had more time to soak in Florence (which is the place I'm most excited for) and possibly do a day trip to Siena or Bologna? Or should I split the time evenly, and spend time enjoying a bit of aperitivo culture and the Last Supper in Milan? If I stay in Milan a couple nights, I'll still have time to spend 3 or so days in Florence, so I'm torn.

I've heard only amazing things about Florence, and mixed experiences of Milan, but I don't really have expectations and it could be cool to see. I have to come back to Milan anyway to fly out the following Sunday am, and I think I'll stay in a hotel by MXP the night before as it's an am flight -- it looks like the Moxy is pretty convenient?

I would love any advice on the itinerary I have in mind, and if you think anything should be reordered or skipped, as all I have booked so far is Zurich! Also would be great to have recs of best neighborhoods to stay in both cities -- I'll have a big suitcase so I'd like to stay pretty close to the train station, but also want to feel safe as a solo female traveller and also feel like I'm staying somewhere a bit interesting/cool. Mostly excited to eat so if there's any standout meals I shouldn't miss along the way, I'd love to add to my growing list!

The Italian regional train from Tirano to Milan goes right past Varenna at Lake Como. I'd highly recommend a few days in this beautiful and peaceful area. IMHO, Lake Como is much preferable to city life in Milan. We have been to Lake Como twice, and plan to return. Hotel Du Lac is our favorite place to stay in Varenna, a room with a balcony directly on the lake. They also have a great happy hours , right on the lake.
Bar il Molo restaurant is located at one of he most scenic areas in Varenna, a great place to have a spritz or a pizza.
Have a wonderful trip!

I think you’ll need a break after the trains on Monday. Milan for one night makes some sense, then on to Firenze. Varenna is a nice idea, too, but mid-October is getting to off-season and either weather or closures could hamper your enjoyment, not mention another train transfer with a large suitcase.

That would still give you part of Tuesday in Firenze plus Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, back to Milan for last night before flight. 4 nights in Firenze is a nice stay.

Hi, this sounds like a great trip. Personally, I would maximize the time in Florence, no matter what. If it's the thing that most excites you, let me just add it's even more fabulous than you imagine! I wonder if the hotel on Lake Como would let you check out a day early if the weather is dreadful? I would still stop there rather than Milan.

The most difficult thing I noticed about your itinerary is carrying a large suitcase - taking trains & getting to hotels & on and off different train platforms lugging a suitcase up & down stairs. I did a 5-day, 6-city business trip across Northern Europe in late winter with only the smallest carry-on. It's not fun but it can be done!! And there's an entire section on RS about packing... https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/packing

I agree. If you're attracted by Florence maximise your time there. Milan is chaotic and stressful anyway despite its interesting sights. You're in your twenties so a couple of extra hours by train to get to Florence are unlikely to exhaust you. Go straight to Florence.
Also bear in mind that the advantage of travelling in October is that you can book accommodation last minute. So you could book the first few nights in Florence and then decide whether to spend longer there or fit in Milan too. Last night near the airport is always a good idea
Also agree about the luggage. Once you've finished your work nobody is interested in what you're wearing and dragging a large suitcase around is boring. Cut the clothes right down and make sure you've got two pairs of comfortable shoes, you'll do a lot of walking.....

It just occurred to me you could drop off a bag at Milan Central station if there's a place to leave a bag, before continuing to Florence? I've done this sort of thing before, pre-pack for the rest of my trip & leave a bag somewhere I will come back to on my way home. Or IF you decided to spend a night coming & going to Florence in Milan, hotels usually keep bags for returning guests.

Florence is my second favorite city(after Charleston). Every time I go there, I spend more time than I did on the previous trip. I have never been to Milan and doubt that I will ever go there. As you mentioned, there are several good day trip possibilities from Florence. Plus, you can just unpack once and stay in the same room most of the week. You will have to spend the night before you fly out in Milan, so you could take the train back to Milan late afternoon on Friday and have all day Saturday in Milan.
