Is this a good place to visit. Can you ferry from mainland? Any recommended beach resorts or must see sights?

Sardinia is wonderful! But please don't tell anybody. Though there are ferries, you can avoid the 5 1/2 hour crossing by short, inexpensive flights from FCO or other airports to Càgliari, Olbia or Alghero and you'll avoid the trek to Civitavecchia. To me the biggest draw is the natural beauty of the island and its wonderful people. Round a corner and there's another stunning view of the sea. Cross the mountains and you'll almost think you're in the Alps. Watch Chicago out for the livestock on the roads!
As far as beach resorts, I'd recommend the Emerald Coast. Not as resorty beaches around Villasimius are great! Sights to see? the La Madelena Archipeligo. In Càgliari: Bastion of St. Remy, Duomo, Citadella dei Musei, Santuario e Basilica de Bonaria, the various towers surrounding the Bastion. Alghero: Grotta di Nettuno, historic center of the city, Cathedral and diocesan museum. Oristano: the Cathedral of Santa Maria, day trips to the beaches and Roman ruins on the Sinis Peninsula and the spectacular Nuraghe in Burimini.
