Rough Draft Incomplete Naples Itinerary

I will have 4 nights in Naples and am currently working on my itinerary. I will be arriving by train from Florence and staying in the Centro Storico area ( 3 mins from Sansevero). I love to explore on foot and tend to go off the intended route when I see something that captures my eye. However, due to the number of places I want to see and the closing times of each, I will have to be sure to limit what I so enjoy until the attractions visits are over.
I'd welcome suggestions. You can now see why my husband chose to stay at home, he could never keep up with my travel pace.

Arrival Day check-in 3pm

  • Santa Chiara (church 745am-1245pm & 430pm-8pm/cloister 930am-530pm)
  • Gesu Nuovo Church (8am-1pm & 5pm-730pm)

Explore the area, grab dinner

Day Two

Hit the streets early 7am for breakfast and photo taking

  • Sansevero Chapel (have 9am ticket)
  • San Gregorio Armeno Church (9am-noon)
  • San Giovanni Carbonara Church (9am-1pm)
  • Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio (10am-2pm)
  • Back to apartment if needed
  • Archaeology Museum (9am-730pm)
  • Duomo (museum 930-530pm/cathedral 830am-1pm & 330pm-730pm)

Dinner and a whole lot of walking taking it all in, not having to worry about opening/closing times of attractions

Day Three
Pompeii (9am-7pm) get there right at opening
Herculaneum (830am-730pm-last entrance at 6pm)

I debated on doing both in one day, but I don't see any other way around this. Pompeii is a must. If I spent too long there and ended up not having enough time for Herculaneum I would be okay with that decision.
If I am not exhausted, more exploring on foot in the evening. Many tire after long sightseeing days, but I am almost always energized and on a high, in awe of the world before me. There is time to crash when you get home :)

Day Four

  • Procida - early morning ferry spending half the day there walking from one end to the other with stops along the way
  • Naples - still working on this part but will be focusing on exploring the area around waterfront to include Castel Nuovo (photos only), Piazza del Plebiscito, Galleria Umberto, Royal Palace, several fountains and more.

I wanted to take one of the funicular rides and check out the Toledo metro station.. I have not yet put that in my plans.

We did a concert at Gesu Nuovo and it was one of my favorite experiences in Naples. If that would satisfy your interest, it might free up some time. The Rick Steves guidebook gave short shrift to the cloisters at Santa Chiara, but we were glad we visited.

I just answered your Turkish Air posting. When are you going on this Naples trip? I will be there for the month of November but won't get back to Naples from Southern Italy until the end of November. I only rent apts myself.

If not Pompeii and Herculaneum; which will be a lot, consider a stop at the Villa of Oplontis after Pompeii. It's is a villa that was also buried by Vesuvius. It will take about an hour to visit and there will be no crowds. It's one train station north and then a 5 minute walk. Or if you can find it, there is a free shuttle from Pompeii Scavi to Oplontis.

I don't know enough about Naples to suggest you'll be too rushed to see all of your day 2, but we were disappointed that we only had 2 hours to spend at the Archeological Museum. We could have spent hours. The perfectly preserved artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum are worth the visit, and it helps tie together what you'll see at Pompeii. Personally, I'm glad we saw Pompeii prior to the museum.

Boy, I had high hopes of getting some more ideas for my own 4 days in Naples, but turns out the OP likes churches a lot more than I do.

Just kidding, though once again I'm reminded that we all travel for different reasons. Certainly my wife and I are looking forward with great anticipation to seeing Pompei and Herculaneum, as well as the Archeology Museum. The rest of our time we'll probably play by ear.

Since are going to Procida, you may want to also go to Pozzuoli and check out their flavian amphitheater. It is the same construction as the Colloseum in Rome, only slightly smaller BUT with no crowds and you can go into the underground portion as well. We did this last year and I believe it was only 10 euros to get in.

I also recommend the Catacombs of San Gennario in Naples. They have an English guided tour, and it is rather fascinating and towards a good cause.
