I’m sure this question has been asked before but I don’t see a way on this site to search previous posts so sorry if I am redundant.
I will be doing plenty if walking in Rome but am trying to fit a lot in two days. What is most reliable way to get rides if need be. Taxi or Uber. I have Uber app and am wondering if there is a taxi app or are they plentiful on the streets as in NYC?
You have to go to designated spots to wait in line for a taxi. They are all over the city but we found this summer when busy plan extra time to wait in line for one.- especially dinner time. Hotels can only call expensive private cars. Also no Uber that we saw.
For searching, if you’re using a laptop/personal computer there’s a search option at the top of the page. If you’re on the Forum page on a smartphone, click on the square with lines in the upper left corner and a search box should open up.
There’s no regular Uber in Rome, just Uber Black which is the most expensive. Most larger piazzas will have a spot with some taxis.

Last month while in Rome we had no issue with getting a taxi. We did this from the taxi stand at termini (waited maybe 5 minutes), Piazza Trilussa with no wait and on another occasion our hotel called one for us. You should be fine, just find the nearest stand when you are out and prefer a taxi to walking. If unsure, pop into a shop and ask where the nearest stand is.

Thanks everyone! Wish I had more time in Rome so I could have a more leisurely pace!
You’ll be fine
Just go to a taxi stand
They are basically in front of all major sites
You can’t just flag one down like in NYC
....... Hotels can only call expensive private cars........ That is not true. Hotel can call regular taxis and do. The only difference is that the meter starts the minute the cab accepts the call so it shows up at the hotel with a couple of Euro on the meter. ALSO -- before you get in make sure the card reader is working. All taxis are required to take credit cards but... sometimes the machine is not working. Just double check.
Second, taxis are reasonable in Rome and generally honest. You can flag a taxi down as you do in New York city or Chicago. Have to get a taxi at taxi stand. Just look around the stands are everywhere.
I downloaded a taxi app called Free now recommended on another forum. I’ll give it a try if there’s no taxi stand nearby. Has anyone used it?
Has anyone used it?
Hundreds of thousands any day, to the point that smartphone-less romans complain because in many stands outside the city center there are no cabbies anymore.
There is also a metro that is a quick way to get around the city as it doesn't get stuck in traffic. As well as trams and buses.
Good point about about transit!
Wondering if free now taxi app is used in all of Italy of primarily in Rome?
is used in all of Italy of primarily in Rome?
All over Italy.
Like itTaxi, that is the most downloaded one.
There are also other apps, like WeTaxi, that are very popular in some cities because they have been developed there. Anyway, if you install itTaxi and FreeNow you shouldn't need a third one.
Just returned from 14-day European RS tour. Starting in Rome. Used Uber twice with no problem in Rome.
taxi app
Freenow or itTaxi. They work fine and are super convenient. Freenow is owned by Mercedes Benz and BMW Group
Uber exists but only uber black
I think since last year you can use Uber to summon regular taxis in Rome. Uber reached a joint operating agreement with ItTaxi, so you can use either App.
