Rome - suggested neighborhoods/ hotels?

Hi,
My husband, 18 yr old daughter & myself are spending 4 nights in Rome next June. Any recommendations on what area/neighborhood would be best to look for accommodations? It's our first trip there and we will be arriving by train from Cinque Terre. We plan on catching all usual sights. It's our last leg of our 12 day trip. I have been looking on FlipKey & VRBO so far. Would love any suggestions/recommendations. Thanks so much,
Michelle

Our favorite neighborhood in Rome is the Pantheon area. It's been awhile, but we stayed last time at the Hotel Abruzzi. They have remodeled since then, the rooms look nicer. We had a room with a view of the Pantheon and the Piazza della Rotunda and loved that. I was at the window for half the night watching the people in the Piazza. When the windows were closed the room was very quiet and noise wasn't a problem. We would stay there again. The location is walkable from anywhere in Rome, which is what we do.

Have a great trip!

Look up Hotel Exe Della Torre Argentina - booking.com. We stayed there last June. It's a good, solid hotel. I relly liked the location. Well positioned for midday breaks. Close to many sites. Only a few minutes walk from pantheon. I would stay here again.

We always stay in the Termini area (five times) and use Hotel Aberdeen or Sonya. Wife prefers the lattes are Hotel Sonya. It is a little closer to Termini and directly across from the Opera House. The Termini area is very convenient for transit, buses, trams and, obviously, the train station. There are a number of less touristy restaurants in the area. But it is on the edge of main attractions. You can hit most sights with less than a 20 min walk but it is an hour to the Vatican. One advantage is that you can be just about anywhere in the area and find a bus headed to Termini since a large number of buses go to Termini.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. There's so many apartments/hotels to choose from it gets overwhelming! I will look up all of your suggestions.

It helps to choose your "area" first. Then, search for accommodations. Otherwise, it can be overwhelming. Some like Prati which is north of Vatican. I really like Pantheon- Campo dei Fiori area. It's central to so many things. Get a map (guidebook) and locate Piazza Navona-Campo dei Fiori- Victor Emmanuel Monument and draw a rough circle around them. This is a great central location. Great for night time strolls. Then, find a place more or less around here. Termini area is very workable, easy bus/metro/cab connections.

We stayed at this airbnb with a great view of the Colosseum out the window. Price was about $150 a night (Canadian $ - this was in Sept). I reviewed it in the link below. Pros - the Metro is right there, some lovely churches nearby, the photos are accurate - it was a lovely apt, nothing like an early morning walk over to the Colosseum! Cons...some night noise from bars at street level - usually gone by 1am (earplugs or white noise app for light sleepers), nearby hospital meant what seemed like non-stop sirens, no washer.

I quite liked it tho - the pros outweighed the cons for me - just being able to look out the window and BOOM - there's the Colosseum. Bedroom was big, pull out couch was comfy, kitchen was great for preparing meals, nearby supermarket, and central enough that most days we went back to the room during the hottest part of the afternoon to relax and cool off. Friendly owner - answered all questions promptly. And...Don Pepe Gelateria downstairs around the corner - best gelato I had in Rome!

Thanks for the advice. I will narrow it down to a couple areas then go from there.

If you would be prepared to stay in a B&B I strongly recommend the all'Orologio which is five minutes walk from the Piazza Navona in one direction and the Castel Sant'Angelo the other.
It is very comfortable, in the heart of the historic centre and has the added bonus as you enter the front door of the building of looking like you live on a Roman street rather than in a hotel.

Depending on how fit you all are Rome is a very walkable city with good although often crowded public transport. I would think that June being very high season the sooner you book accommodation the better.

My husband, 18 yr old daughter and myself were in Rome last July! I found an apartment (airbnb) in the Piazza Navona area. Great location. Walked to Vatican, Spanish Steps, Trastevere. (Got lazy and cabbed to Coliseum!).

We were right above a busy street with shops and restaurants. Could have used earplugs, but hey! we were in Rome!

We stayed at Hotel Smeraldo, a few blocks from Campo de Fiori and the Victor Emanuel statue. At the end of the street is Salumeri Roscioli, one of the best places to eat in Rome. We walked everywhere from there, about 20 minutes to Vatican City, crossed the river to Trastevere, about 5 minutes, about 5 minutes to the Pantheon and all the other sights in that area. We never did use public transportation except for taxis to and from the train station and airport. We went early to Trevi fountain and many other famous sights and took our photos when no one else was there. Sights get packed by 8-9AM.
