Taxi stand is right outdide the terminal
Fixed rate 55 euros-no tip required

Hand the driver your hotel address on a slip of paper
Pay by either cash or credit card

Only use the official taxi line-do not go with anyone elsewhere offering a “taxi”

Double check to make sure the credit card machine in the cab is working. Sometimes they might be broken. Rome taxi drivers are generally reliable.

Just to let you know, I was trying to get a taxi at FCO on June 23 when I arrived, and the line was so long at the taxi stand that I gave up and decided to take the train to Tiburtina and walk to the hotel (which was close to the Tiburtina station).

There are some private car transfers (limo type of service) that you can book in advance, although they are more expensive than the 55€ flat fare with the regular taxi. One of those services, often mentioned by users here is RomeCabs, in spite the name it is a limo service. I've never used it myself, but those who have were pleased with the service. I see that they now charge 100€ for 1-2 people, so substantially more than the regular taxi (maybe that's the reason for the super long line at the regular taxi stand last month).

The big cities, like Rome and Florence, have become ridiculously crowded and expensive (especially hotels), even just compared to a year ago (I go every year so I can see the difference). I think people need to venture out of those major city destinations if they want to save. Outside of those major destinations, prices are still reasonable and comparable to the past years.

The official stand is efficient - just get in line and they will assign you to the next available cab appropriate for the size of your party. Confirm with the driver up front if paying with credit card.

Rome Cabs has long been mentioned on this forum as a reliable private transfer service - for a price, of course.
