Hi Renee!

I'm based in Taormina so I can give you solid local recommendations there. For the other cities I know them less well, but here's what I'd suggest:

TAORMINA (my specialty!):

Best restaurants avoiding tourist traps:

  • Osteria da Rita (Via Calapitrulli, 3) - Family-run since 1991, authentic homestyle Sicilian cooking. NO reservations so expect 30-45 min wait peak times, but absolutely worth it. Generous portions, reasonable prices. Locals eat here daily.

  • Osteria RossoDiVino (Vico De Spuches, 8) - Hidden gem in intimate courtyard off main street. Excellent wine selection, creative seafood dishes. BOOK AHEAD! Small place, fills up fast.

  • Trattoria da Nino (Via Pirandello, 37) - Classic trattoria, 50+ years in business. Panoramic terrace with sea views. Great for fresh fish and traditional pasta.

  • Al Saraceno (Via Madonna della Rocca, 16/18) - If you want THE view: stunning sunset over Mount Etna from high above town. Worth the walk or short taxi up. Book ahead, open daily.

For best arancini: Da Cristina (Via Strabone, 2) - where locals queue. Grab and eat in Piazza Duomo nearby.

Important: Skip restaurants on Corso Umberto with photo menus and people trying to pull you in - those are tourist traps!

ORTIGIA (Syracuse):
The main square (Piazza Duomo) has several good spots but pricey. Better value in the side streets. Morning market near Tempio di Apollo is great for fresh produce and street food.

When are you visiting? Happy to give more specific Taormina tips!
