There will be two couples going to Sorrento next May. My wife and I have been there before and have taken the bus down the Amalfi Coast and back to Sorrento by boat, but this time we are thinking about hiring a private driver for a complete day. We want to spend a few hours in Positano as well as Amalfi. Any suggestions?

I would ask at your hotel. They'll know someone that they trust and that they can hold accountable. Has worked for me the past 3 years in Sorrento.

We were just in Sorrento. The buses are fine, but since you have someone to share the cost with, a private driver would really enhance your visit. A driver would provide you with flexibility and you wouldn't be wasting time waiting for buses. The RS guide has information about Mondo Guide Tours. Apparently they are located in Naples, but RS has had good luck with them and they offer special deals for RS readers.

I can highly recommend Rainbow Limo service as a private driver for the Amalfi. Guila was our driver for the day, and as a Positano native she provided my sister, DH and I an insiders view of the coast. Price was very good as well.

Mena, the owner, was awesome to work with before and during the trip. We even changed the itinerary for two of the days after our arrival in Positano and she accommodated both requests with no problems or extra charges.
We had two different drivers and they were both excellent. My wife got a little anxious driving on the coastal road and they drove slowly to make sure she was comfortable.
They are also highly rated on Tripadvisor and were the only one of four companies we contacted before our trip that replied to our email.
Can't say enough good things about them.

Just a note that when one car drives slowly on a two-lane road, all cars drive slowly. That’s one reason why the AC is so congested in the summer!
