Ravenna to Orvieto

Our cruise is docking in Ravenna, does it make sense to think we can travel to Orvieto by train and bus that day? It looks like it might be difficult maybe it would be best to spend the night in Bologna or Venice and then continue to Orvieto the next day.

Hi Jo, do you know what time you would be able to be at Ravenna’s train station? There’s several train options, but I would try for one that has just one transfer or two at the most.

You can see them at www.Trenitalia.com
The top right corner can switch it to English.

If you purchase a paper ticket for the train, make sure you place it in the validation machine to date/time stamp it, so you don’t end up with a large fine.

Spend the night in Ravenna and see the mosaics
It would be a shame to miss them

Heading to Venice doesn’t make sense, it’s the wrong direction

We will take a cab from the port to the train station which is around 8miles. We dock at 6 so I figure we could be at the station by 8. I will check again, I thought there was only one train a day from Ravenna to Bologna than on to Orvieto with changes. Thanks for the quick reply, I will check it out

We have been to Ravenna before it was wonderful Now since Venice's port is not accepting large ships we're docking in Ravenna.

There are lots of train options with a minimum of one train change (at Bologna Centrale for sure and possibly also in Florence). The journey is altogether about 4.5+ hours, therefore if you disembark at anytime in the morning, you can make it to Orvieto at a decent time. Therefore there is no need to spend the night unless you wish to have a quick visit in Bologna or Dlorence.

You’ll need to transfer twice first in Bologna (1h) then in Orvieto (1h 45m) to get to Orvieto's Centro station which is the historical section of the city (another 5-minutes). You’ll then need to take a funicular to the top.

We came into Ravenna on RCL in June and we took a bus to the train station--maybe 10-12 miles. Other than the mosaics, we didn't see any reason to spend time there.

The train line goes up to Bologna (1 hr. 15 minutes) where you change trains to Florence (37 minutes).
In Florence you change to a local train (not express) and it'll take about 2 hours 15 minutes to get to Orvieto.

The Orvieto train station has a funicular in the parking lot that takes you up the hill into the city.

Orvieto is a really nice hill town, and it's a quick 70 minute ride on the local train into Rome Termini.

Hi David, Was the bus to the train station near the cruise port, we figured we had to take a taxi to the station. Was it difficult on the bus with your luggage?

Trenitalia sells a ticket to “Orvieto Centro” which is just the addition of a bus ticket from ORVIETO station to top

Thank you, Christine! Jo, you’ll need to transfer in Bologna (1h) to get to Orvieto (1h 45m) and take a bus to Orvieto’s historical sight which is one less stop than what I said above.

You don't need to take the bus up the hill in Orvieto. The funicular is a much cooler experience. However, the top of the funicular is at one end of the historic district, quite some distance from the Duomo. It's walkable if you like to walk, but many folks--especially those without sufficient time to sightsee at a relaxed pace--would choose to hop on the bus. The bus does stop near the top of the funicular; I don't know the exact location.

The bus stops just in front of funicular exit
It is supposedly timed to meet funiculars
We waited about 10 min
Get off at Duomo Piazza
