Questioning Itinerary

We will be in Rome for two nights in late August (been there twice already) and planned one night in Cinque Terre then 2-3 nights in Florence as a base before ending up in Venice. Never been to CT and wonder your thoughts on CT vs Lake Como area. We could just as easy skip CT and go straight to Lake Como from Rome for a couple of days then on to Venice (skipping Florence - which been twice - just using as a base). We just aren't settled on this issue. Been through Lake Como area on the train but never stopped. We really just want to be on the water, eat and drink, soak up some scenery and chill.

I see that you already have a reservation in the CT?

Are you able to cancel without penalty?

I'm not a fan on one-night stays, generally, and if you have already been to Florence but not the Como area, then I'd probably opt out of that one + the CT and spend your 3 nights on the lake. August is a very busy time of the year on the popular "water" locations though, and finding accommodations this late in the game could take some effort.

Varenna seems to be the location of choice for many, many RS posters (I've been there but haven't stayed) so you might look there for availability although hopefully others have alternative ideas should everything already be booked up. That one is nice because it's small-ish, pretty and on the train line (Varenna-Esino station). It also has ferry service around the lake.

Our reservation is still able to cancel and know we need to make a decision fast.
