Question regarding churches in Rome and Sicily..............

HI there,

I will be in Rome and parts of Sicily later this year. I know that females are supposed to have thier shoulders covered and I believe knees as well (so in a skirt or such). I read something somewhere else that sad men were going into churches on with longer shorts but not so long that their knees are covered. Does anyone have any experience in seeing FEMALES going through churches with longer shorts on (instead of a skirt or dress) and getting into the churches ok? I would prefer to wear shorts while I am there, however, I don't want to go against the grain. I figure I can bring a skirt in my day pack if necessary to put on that would cover my knees, but just wonder if longer shorts are definitely a no-no?

Thanks in advance for anyone's reply that has had on the ground experience.

I wore Capri pants or long pants with a nice tee shirt and had no trouble.

Our guides in Rome told us it is actually the thighs that need to be covered rather than the knees. Both men and women were in long shorts, even in St. Peter’s. They also had cloth to cover shoulders if needed and that could be tied around your waist if shorts were too short. Florence Duomo was the only other church strict about shoulders and they allowed shorts also.

If you don't stand out from the crowd you will likely be fine almost all the time
