My husband and I are planning a trip to Italy in May. We haven’t been to Italy before and while we know it is an unusual first choice, We are considering Aprilia. We like our trips with a slower rhythm and off the beaten path.
Please comment if we are totally off base and missing some information that might discourage a visit.
But if we are on the right track, please let us know 1 to 3 towns we should stay or visit.
Or, tell us more about the masserie and anywhere particular you’ve had a nice stay.
(10 days, leave may 4th/5th, 2 active adults f47,m55, love food, coffee, walking/hiking, coastal towns)
Thank you!
I love the Puglia region & have been there the last three years in May. First, could you slightly shift your timing to be in Bari for the San Nicola festival? It’s May 7-9, and I always make sure I’m there May 8.
I’ve never stayed in a masserie since I just travel by train & the occasional bus. Puglia is perfect for a slower rhythm. There’s hardly any “must see” city sites - just a lovely atmosphere that will make you want to return!
In Puglia I’ve stayed in (going down the coast) Trani, Bari, Polignano a Mare, Monopoli. And inland, Alberobello, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Ostuni & Lecce. None of those are a bad choice. Polignano a Mare is my favorite. I’d suggest staying in at least one coastal city & one inland one for variety.
There’s some fantastic biking trails. I rented an ebike in Alberobello and road out in the countryside, and I’ve seen bicyclists staying at other cities.
If you do a search, you will find lots of previous discussions. Here are some to get you started.

May is a fantastic time to be in Italy, though I’d make it as late as possible because I don’t like cool weather. In late May, you may even be able to take a dip.
What made you choose a Puglia, and will you be renting a car? A masseria stay implies car.
The one place that would be nonnegotiable for me is Lecce, everywhere else tbd by transport and personal appeal.
