Pompeii tour with Gaetano Manfredi

I have seen several posts on taking a private tour with Gaetano Manfredi and I just want to add to the glowing reviews on a tour we took in July of 2023

I have to admit I am biased, I am enchanted by Italy and I have a love of Roman history in particular. This review is from my third visit to Pompeii, this time with adult children and grandchildren. I have been fortunate enough to go on many tours throughout my travels in Italy...
That being said, the Pompeii tour with Gaetano was by far, the best tour I have ever taken.
What makes Gaetano such a good tour guide is not only his love of history and his depth of knowledge, but his enthusiasm for sharing what he knows with his clients. I learned a great many new details about Roman life and how it pertains to our life today.

He was careful to take into account the varying ages and travel experience of everyone in our group and tailored the tour so we could all enjoy ourselves equally.

I recommend spending a few moments when you first begin your tour getting to know a bit about Gaetano and also sharing with him your experience/knowledge and interests about Roman life. (For example, I let him know I was particularly interested in seeing mosaics, and he made sure to find extra examples of them for us to see). If there is something specific you wish to see, he will make it happen!

Can you post contact information from Gaetano Manfredi?
Is he located in Pompey
How long was your tour ?
What was the cost?

Thank you! We are planning to go to Pompeii in October.

What was the specific type of tour you took with him and how much did it cost? I would be making a day trip from Rome. Below are the options listed on their website for the Rome day trips. Unless I am missing it, I don't see prices on his website. I am interested in Pompeii. I am not sure if we want to go on a tour of Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, and Positano or focus more on Pompeii and Vesuvius. We do not want to hang out on the beach, but seeing beautiful terrains would be nice. I've never been to Italy and am still trying to figure out what are my "must see" on this trip.

Day Tour Rome, Pompeii, Positano on the Amalfi Coast
Rome/Pompeii/Vesuvius /Rome
Rome/Pompeii/Herculaneum/Rome
Rome/Pompeii/Naples Archeological Museum/Rome

On October 12 my friends and I did a private tour of Pompeii with Gaetano, and I think this experience was one of the high points of my 17 days in Italy. He was an excellent and enthusiastic guide who really added so much to our entire time in Pompeii. I highly, highly recommend booking a tour with Gaetano!!

There's no question that he's a great resource but I don't understand why it's so difficult to get people who've used him to share what it cost them for his tours. They need to detail the size of their group, how many hours they engaged him, and any other details such as transport costs and/or multi-attraction sites but It's not asking too much to get at least a ballpark of fees for his services?

Thank you, Kathy! Even an estimate/range of prices would be super helpful for context!

Hi there,

I did the original post and I am so sorry to just be looking at it now and not answering on cost. And honestly I don't remember because it seemed so reasonable, especially afterwards because it was so amazing. We did a private tour for 4 adults and 2 kids, we added an extra hour, so 3 full hours and I am just guessing it was under 300 euros?? (I understand "reasonable " to me could be v expensive for some. Anyway, if you contact him, just Google Gaetano Manfredi Pompeii and you will find him, he is very upfront about his pricing. As for a day trip from Rome, it is doable, but it will be a loooong day, especially if you take the trains rather than a private car.

One more thing, to see Pompeii from Rome, maybe add on an overnight in Napoli to your trip!?!, gives you a chance to eat Pizza at pizzeria Michele, and also to go to the National Museum. Then you can be refreshed and relaxed for your Pompeii tour!

Thanks, brennasw. Even as a ballpark, it’s a helpful context.

I have a question about tipping when the tour guide is the owner. We have a tour with Gaetano in a few weeks. Our tour is 800€ for a private tour of Pompeii for 4 people with private transfer from/to Naples. We are also touring the Vesuvius crater on our own after Pompeii with our driver waiting to take us back to Naples when we are done. My question is - since Gaetano is the tour owner should we tip him and if so, how much? This is our most expensive tour scheduled by far but based on his glowing reviews and the private car transfer we are doing it. Thoughts??

Hi there,

Regarding tipping, I don't think you should worry about feeling obligated in any way. However, if you enjoy the tour so much that you wish to add a tip, he will certainly appreciate it. We did give him a tip, I definitely thought he was worth it!

Thank you!
Is there a customary percentage or per/person amount? I have no idea what is appropriate.

I think best to just go with what seems right and what you are comfortable with. It really should be reflective of the experience you will have seeing Pompeii through the eyes of a local who is passionate about where he is and the lagacy of his people. Tips need not be because of any social norms or expectations. We tipped him because our time together was so special and meaningful for us.
