Pompeii, Sorrento area - hotel and sightseeing suggestions

Hello fellow travelers,

My husband and I will be in the Campania region in the beginning of June 2022. We have 2 days/3 nights to visit the area, with one of the days to be spent in Pompeii. Here are our questions: Is it easy to drive from Sorrento to Pompeii or are we better off taking the train? Is Sorrento where we want to stay or should we stay further up the coast closer to Pompeii? Is Sorrento worth visiting? We are looking for suggestions for must-see towns/areas to visit and also for suggestions on upscale hotels in Sorrento or between Sorrento and Pompeii. TIA

It's impossible to say during Covid, but this is an almost year-round destination (especially for the UK) that used to book up six months in advance. Particularly if you have a low budget, you need to book early, and prepare a list of at least six choices. We booked late enough that we had to go what Rick calls a "Worthwhile Splurge", at the Ambasciatori in Sorrento.

I'd say the opposite of your question: Pompeii (except for the ancient site, Pompeii Scavi) is not worth visiting, Sorrento probably is. But it has only one, petroleum scented by the adjacent marinas, beach. The fancy cliffside hotels (like the Ambasciatori) have an elevator to a lovely private wooden boardwark gulf-bathing area, if you like that sort of thing. Most people stay in Sorrento for the excellent daytripping connections.

Welcome!
Sorrento is a lovely town, great restaurants, beautiful views, very walkable, fun shopping. Also the transportation hub for the area.
No need for a car in town or to get to Pompeii. Car would be more of a headache than a help.
The local Circumvesuvina train is only a few euros- takes about 30 min to Pompeii Scavi.

We loved our stay at Hotel Grand de la Ville.
Killer view, beautifully appointed/furnished rooms and the best bkft we've ever had

Another often mentioned here is Antiche Mura

Both within easy walking distance to train and town center.

Is it easy to drive from Sorrento to Pompeii or are we better off
taking the train?

How are you trying to come to Sorrento in the first place? From where in Italy? That said, I'd say no, don't drive.

Is Sorrento where we want to stay or should we stay further up the
coast closer to Pompeii?

It may depend on what you're looking to do when NOT at Pompeii but I'd say no, there's no reason to stay further up the coast.

Is Sorrento worth visiting?

For us, yes, it absolutely was but you don't say what you're interested in doing/seeing on your trip so only you can answer that question. Do some reading up on Sorrento before you go.

Editing to add: where are you going after Sorrento or that general area?
