We will be in Salerno in June and going to take the train to Pompei to visit the ruins. I am looking for suggestions for a private guide or tour with a small group. Should we do 2 or 3 hour tour? Thanks!

It might be quite hot in June.
Walks of Italy has small group tours of Pompei. As the other poster noted, it will be hot so aim for early morning. There is no shade.
Mondo has two public tour flavors -- "for RS" and "endorsed by RS". For booking the difference is whether you go to the website sharedtours or sharedtrips
On the "for RS" if 6 people sign up the tour goes, otherwise it will be cancelled. We looked and for the dates we could go they never had enough people on the signup lists (you can see the count online). If your group is large enough this may be the way to go.
The 2nd flavor tours seem to be less prone to cancellation and this is what we ended up taking. The link is https://www.sharedtrips.com/shared-city-tours/pompeii There were only 5 people plus the guide. The Mondo guide was fanstastic, BTW
