Plane/train help in June?

We are planning a 2 week trip to northern Italy and Croatia. I can get non-stop flight at a good price, at good times, in and out of Milan. I want to go first to Trieste, en route to Croatia, and then end our trip in Venice, before taking return flight from Milan. My question is, does this make sense? How easy? expensive? long a trip? is it from Milan to Trieste? And what about from Venice back to Milan? Thanks for any tips!

I see that this is a follow-on question from https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/croatia/2-weeks-in-june-in-northern-croatia.

Although the flight is direct and convenient to Milan, it turns into a connection when Milan is not really your destination. See our latest train ticket time and cost maps at https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/cost-maps. Italian train tickets are not terribly expensive and advance-purchase discounts are also available for through www.trenitalia.com.

Are you driving or taking the train?
You can also use www.rome2rio.com, which can give you ways to reach various destinations, approximate cost and time of travel.
If you drive, you can also plot your destinations using Google Maps, or similar websites, which will give you distances and driving times.
if you rely on trains, Italian train timetables are in the Trenitalia website:
www.trenitalia.com
Just enter FROM, TO, DATE (use a date within 7 days from today to see also regional trains, which are uploaded weekly), HOUR. Use the spelling of the station in Italian:
MILAN=MILANO,
MILAN AIRPORT=MALPENSA AEROPORTO,
VENICE=VENEZIA SANTA LUCIA
To Croatia you might have to use buses, depending on where you go.

To answer your question, from Milan to Trieste is about 4.5 hours (train or car). Venice to Milan, it's about 2.5 to 3 hrs (train or car). The Milan Malpensa airport is a bit further west of Milan, so add another hour to that.
