Pay by phone

Most shops in the area I live in the US allow payment by tapping phone, so I rarely get out my credit card any more. Is this common in Italy? We will be staying in Rome, Parma and Lucca. Seems like a good way to avoid losing a credit card, if it's workable...

Thanks!

Handhelds read the NFC chip inside phones just like another contactless card. I'd rather check the logos on the window.

Yes, about 90% of places I went to over the past 2 weeks in Italy had the tapping style reader which will work with apple pay or card with the wireless ability.
Not everywhere though, a few places still had to insert the card so Apple Pay would have been a no go. Similar to around me in the US I would say.
