Parking Rental Car on mainland for Venice

We will have a rental car that we will be having for our entire trip including the portion that we will be staying in Venice.

Seeing that obviously we cannot take the car to the island, we were wondering where we can park it while we take the vaporetto to the island for our stay?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

There is a large parking garage just after you reach the island as you come into
Piazzale Roma. Can't vouch as to rates and safety, but it's probably not cheap.

You could also park in Mestre and then take the tram or bus to Venice. I believe
this has been discussed in the forum within the last year, but can't find the thread.

hey hey Kim L
where are you staying in venice and how many people?
europeforvisitors.com/venice
few parking garages are:
piazzale roma has a parking garage when you reach island as shoeflyer mentions
on the mainland are: mestre, marghera, and marco polo airport. read up on what they offer, the prices that are charged, is there a shuttle to venice, size of car to fit in stall and if covered.

make sure you have and IDP (AAA.com/IDP) for all drivers.
check into hotels are usually 2-4pm and check out 10-11am, keep that in mind unless you can get early check in, check with hotel. or have hotel hold your bags until check in
hope all works out for you, good luck

Thank you so much for all of the great information.

I am assuming there is a bridge to get from the mainland to the car park or a car ferry.

if you decide to use the bridge - really a causeway - across the lagoon to Piazzale Roma and its carparks, please accept the advice on speed. It has many speed cameras, the speed limit is 40 kph (that's fairly close to 25 mph) and there is no fudge factor - people have reported getting camera tickets for 1 kph over the limit.

There is a car ferry but that does not go to the main islands of Venice.

As mentioned above the speed limit on the causeway is enforced by cameras. However the speed limit is actually 70 Km/h not 40, and legally the camera can fine you only if you go at least 5 km/h above the speed limit, therefore you can only go as fast as 75 km/h (about 45 mph) without fear of being ticketed.

If you plan to stay in Venice multiple days, you might also consider parking in Mestre, then taking the train to Santa Lucia station. Parking at the parking structures on Piazzale Roma will cost you from 35€ at the City Garage (which fills up very quickly) to 45€ at the Garage San Marco or about 25€ at Tronchetto. Last time I went by car I parked at the Parcheggio Saba, next to the Mestre station (see below). I think for multiple days they have discounts and you might spend less than 20€ a day. I think the regional train into the city is about 1.50€ one way.

Thank you to everyone for your replies.

We will make sure to drive S-L-O-W-L-Y over the causeway to insure we don't get a surprise in the mail when we get home!

Glad to see that there is parking as I didn't want to waste time returning/re-renting our rental car just to stay a few days in Venice.

Thank you again!
