I’m still trying to figure out our rental car situation. I’ve got a car reserved to pick up on a Sunday at Venice airport as we are leaving Venice and heading to the Dolomites. I’m probably overthinking this, but was wondering if it made any sense at all to just pick the car up on the day we fly into Venice and park it somewhere (not sure where, suggestions?) for the 3 days that we are in Venice. I’m just trying to cut out any extra trip to the airport and would love just to get in the car that Sunday and head to the Dolomites. The price difference is only around $100.
Can you change the pickup location to be either Mestre or Piazzale Roma?
Trying to park the car someplace in Venice seems like a nightmare. Getting
to it with your bags might take as much time as going to the airport. But
Piazzale Roma is obviously closer and Mestre is a little less out of your way
to the Dolomites.
The parking costs would be more than that $100.
Actually it would be easier to pick the car up on arrival and drive to Venice and follow Rick's guidance about parking at the Tronchetto, it's a piece of cake. It is a first class parking garage, easy to get to from the causeway and has a vaporetto stop to go into Venice. When you leave Venice, rather than go to the airport and find the rental car place etc. , all you have to do is take a vaporetto to the Tronchetto get in your car and hit the road.
Pick up car in Mestre or Piazzale Roma as you leave Venice
Thanks everyone. I guess I should have included that all rental companies at Piazzale Roma seem to be closed on Sundays except for Hertz, who are higher in costs per day. I’ll look into the other suggestions and decide. Thank you!
Do as Christine says. Pick up the car at Piazzale Roma the day you leave Venice and save yourself the extra airport rental fees and the taxi ride to the airport. As you leave Piazzale Roma you will head to the mainland to a bridge called Ponte della Libertà (Liberty Bridge) which connects the historical center of Venice with the mainland. Observe the 70 km/h speed limit (not sure if it is still 70) religiously because there are multiple speed cameras on the bridge. Actually there are almost 80,000 speed cameras all over Italy, so be careful everywhere with the accelerator.
If you pick up on a Sunday, then you have no choice but the airport, as most rental offices are closed outside of the airport. From the airport it's easier to get on the freeway to the Dolomites (follow directions to Belluno).
Have you checked rates on www.autoeurope.com for the Hertz location at Piazzale Roma?
Good chance they will have a better rate than going thru Hertz
Sixt seems to be open on Sunday at both Piazzale Roma and Mestre.

In Venice, nights of 18 & 19th April 2024. Parked 2 cars in Venezia Tronchetto Parking @ € 28 per day per car. My sons pre booked https://veneziacenterparking.com/ Not the easiest parking place to get to.
Pre-Biennale. Australian entry was by Indigenous artist Archie Moore. I knew from reports that it was a good entry. So good it was awarded the Golden Lion while we were there.
Caveat. We are experienced at leasing/rental of cars in Europe, particularly in Italy. Being able to find parking etc does require some Italian and confidence in ones own navigational skills. This is a different country and has different ways of doing things to what I am accustomed. To me, some not so good and confusing, some logical and wish they we applied in my country. But above all confidence in your own ability to find solutions and not become flustered when things go pear shaped. The ability to remain calm and sort out a solution. We have allowed time for these interruptions. Have made many errors and have had mishaps and lived to recount with humour. We are not put off or embarrassed by our failures. Keep quiet about them. Do not recommend anyone follow us. There is a motto “who dares wins.”
If you have the right mindset, you will be successful, if not the reverse may result.
