I will be arriving in Palermo on Sept. 10 for 2 nights. I will rely on public transportation from the airport to my room and then pick up a rental car upon my departure for a motor trip of the island. What is the best location for a hotel or B&B? I would like to be near the water unless it is not the best option. We prefer to not be in the chaos of the city but more on the outskirts. This is my first trip to Sicily and any addition information is greatly appreciated.

Last year I stayed in a small B&B in the Cathedral zone, which doesn't sound like what you are looking for, but without a car, Palermo is easy to navigate by bus or on foot. The location of the B&B was near the bus stop to Monreale, and I walked to all the sights within Palermo (occasionally took a bus). For a place on the water, you will probably be near the port, which makes a nice walk to the major sights. By nice I mean a little long but not terrible.
This question has been asked before and already answered by several folks. Are you looking for more responses in addition to these? If these ideas don't work for you, then look on www.booking.com (lots of choices there).
