Northern Italy - 1 week - One location (September 6-13)

I will be arriving into MXP airport in Milan on 9/6 and I am looking for a place in the greater Northern Italy region to spend an entire week.

The goal is to spend a week drinking cappuccinos and working on writing new music (this is done on my laptop so can be done anywhere). I am also hoping to get active with some walking/hiking, swimming and bonus if I can do a biking day. Being within walking distance to a town is important as well (this town can be small, just needs to have more than one restaurant option). Bonus if reachable without a car (busses and ferries are fine).

I have found a wonderful old stone house within walking distance to Nesso on Lake Como. My only hesitation with this choice is that Lake Como could be too packed with tourists and there may be a more underrated alternative (although I recognize that this location will still be quite magical).

Does anyone have suggestions for alternative destinations I should be looking into? What's your favorite Italian lake town? Have you ever been to northern Italy and found your special corner of the world there?

Max,
You may consider going to beautiful Lake Maggiore!

I stayed in Baveno (4Km North of Stresa) on Lake Maggiore some years back.
You can easily reach Baveno via the Alibus from Malpensa (and viceversa)

Stresa is more touristy and thus offers a variety of restaurants, and you can get there by bus, or you can walk if you feel up to it.

You can visit the Borromean Islands, the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso. Verbania, Cannobio, and other lakeside towns and villages via frequent ferries.

You can also go all the way to Locarno (Switzerland) for a long day trip if you choose.

You may also want to visit Lake Orta via bus or train. Avoid train connections in Cuzzago though. You can read about that adventure here.

Here’s a link to my trip report for more details:
Lake Maggiore, my trip in progress…

Enjoy your time in beautiful Italy!

Oh how I wish I were there now!

Thank you for all of the info and suggestions! I've decided to stick with my plan to stay in Nesso. I'll write back after my trip to let y'all know how the trip went regarding tourists and my overall experience.

Lake Maggiore (specifically Baveno or Tenno) sounds like that needs to be my next trip...
