Naples Sept-Oct

Thinking of Naples as a home base for a month Sept-Oct. Been to Italy several times but never in that general region. Will have a car. Suggestions to make that work?

Ditch the car.
The infrastructure in the area south of Naples has been sadly neglected, and is very congested. There is no quick nor efficient mode of getting around. Public transportation has also been neglected. The area is a victim of its Instagram success. We were not prepared for the congestion and crowds in the AC, and as a result, were disappointed in the area.
Shoulder season has disappeared and you will have crowds in the spring and fall.
The area is beautiful, but if you can accept the realities on the ground, you will have a great trip.

I'll attached some recent Searches, as this topic is coming up now several times a week.

Hope it work out for you.
Safe travels!

Stayed in the Vomero neighborhood last September and loved it. The neighborhood itself is great and easily accessible to the historical center of Naples by metro or funicular. Agree, would not have a car in Naples if possible. But if you definitely will have a car, there are some apartments with parking.

I enjoyed Naples! It is a unique, vibrant and interesting city. But in no way do you want a car in Naples. Spend a week or so there to explore Naples, Sorrento, Vesuvius, visit Pompeii and Herculaneum and take a ferry to Capri. I would then take some time in Amalfi to explore the magnificent coast. Since it’s a transportation hub, I’d recommend staying in Amalfi town (Villa Anna Lara is a wonderful, small family run hotel.) from which you could visit other towns on the coast by car, ferry or bus. If you visit Positano, the best views are from the sea or the high roadways at the town’s edge but using a car there is misery!

Then you should drive down to Paestum to see the Greek and Roman ruins. I stayed at B&B La Chora with large rooms, great breakfast and 5 minutes away from town center. From there you could visit a buffalo mozzarella farm and other small towns in the area.

There's a theme here and I agree; ditch the car. Perhaps rent one occasionally for hard to get to places not named Naples or the Amalfi Coast. One taxi ride or even crossing the street in Naples and you'll understand why.

We based ourselves in Sorrento which I'd recommend for part of your trip, but what I did from there you could also do from Naples. I wish we'd spent more time there. Here's my Trip Report if you're interested. https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/trip-reports/trip-report-2-weeks-of-day-trips-from-sorrento

The Campania ArteCard will probably be a great value for you.

I recommend taking a look at actual, historical day-by-day weather statistics for Naples on the website timeanddate.com to see whether you'd prefer to travel earlier or later in the period you've specified. I don't like the shorter days of October, but I think most folks would opt for the lower temperatures of that month.

It's important to check the statistics for multiple years; I usually check the most recent five. Use the pull-down box at the right, just above the graph, to change the month and year displayed. Use the Search box at the upper right to see data for other locations.
