We are a family of 3 (2 adults + one teen age). We are planning Venice in and Rome out. We won't rent a car. Transportation probably be by train, bus or ferry, need suggestions as well:
here is what we are planning:
Venice 2 nights, Train to Florence.
Florence 5 nights (trip to The Leaning Tower of Pisa and Siena), Train to Naples.
Naples 1 night (trip to Pompeii), bus or ferry to Sorrento?
Sorrento 2 nights (trip to Capri), bus or ferry to Amalfi?
Amalfi 2 nights (trip to Positano), bus to Salerno then train to Rome?
Rome 5 nights
Any suggestions?
Is this your first time to Italy? When is this trip?
You need more time in Venice, to start with. We have had flights delayed and canceled, and lost our first day entirely. Venice is a great place to wander and work off jet lag.
There are almost daily posts here on the Forum asking about itineraries , especially focusing on the Amalfi Coast/Sorrento/ Naples areas. I'll see if I can Search and attach a few posts, which contain very helpful info. You can also review the last few months of threads under Italy. There are also well-written Trip Reports posted here.
Hopefully you are aware of the realities on the ground in the AC, the lack of transportation infrastructure , the congestion, and how time- consuming getting anywhere is. We were caught off-guard by these issues, and the crowds in the shoulder seasons.
Have a great time planning. You'll have a wonderful family trip!

Hopefully these Searches will provide useful info as you plan. I know the Search function here is rather clunky.
Safe travels!
