Naples safe? one night before flight home?

For our trip to Italy in May 2018, our group's flight leaves Naples at 7am to come back home to the states. We had originally thought we would stay in Naples the night before our flight since it leaves so early, but after reading the posts on this forum I am wondering if this is a good idea. All of the posts we found are at least 7-10 years old so I am curious if anyone has stayed recently and has an opinion on the current level of safety or cause for concern in Naples.

Thank you!
Emily

Addressing the "safe" part of your question-It hasn't been that recently (about a year ago) but we found the city of Naples perfectly safe (using the same safety precautions as you would in any big city) and I am also among those who love the city. I don't know the area around Naples very well but I'm not sure where else you might stay to catch a 7am flight. Maybe there are airport hotels? I'm sure those much more knowledgeable will contribute their always excellent ideas.

The airport is so close to the city center that there's no upside of staying in an airport hotel. I really enjoyed Naples, so I wouldn't hesitate to stay right in the center and enjoy the final night there.

It is as safe as any other major European city and probably safer than Chicago or New York outside of the downtown areas.

We love Naples and would not hesitate to stay there. As others have said, use the same precautions you would use in any big city. Like you, I would choose to stay near or at the airport simply because of the time of your flight.

Don’t give up the chance to stay at least one night in Naples! The area along the Bay of Naples is Chiaia so look at hotels there. It is a more upscale area.

In the search engine you can filter by date. My glowing review of Napoli is there. I would not hesitate to return to Napoli.

I also love Naples. How much time will you have there? Try to eat some famous wood fired pizza if you can.

Thank you so much for all of the replies! I feel much better! We have been to Italy once before, as well as Scotland and Ireland, so we understand the importance of going with the flow of a city and understanding and being aware of one's surroundings. I'm glad to hear the it is the same for Naples! I'll redo my search filtering by date and read the other reviews!

Becky that's first on our list! ;-)
We will only be there about a half day. We'll arrive in Sorrento on Wednesday and go to Naples on Sunday, and fly home Monday early a.m.

Know that the area right around the train station can look scary, but the city becomes nicer quickly. But, we have never had trouble around the train station.

I'm a retired female, spent 5 days solo in Naples in February 2017. It's gritty but safe. I really enjoyed it . . . most of the time. The most dangerous place is crossing a busy street, until you get the hang of it, wait for nuns or mothers with strollers.

If you can, spend the day there and go to the National Archaeology Museum (a wow) and the RS self-guided walking tour.

It's safe enough but if you are in the areas around the ferry terminal or train station you should be a bit careful about pick pockets...so basically like almost all other big cities but perhaps a bit more so in Naples..

Although I agree that Naples is as safe for tourists as any other city, I don't agree (in this case) about the area around the train station. A few years ago, that area was completely redeveloped, and is rather soul-less. Regular commuters keep the wide, barren sidewalks busy enough for personal safety. The biggest danger is lack of formal crosswalks, making you walk very far to get to your chosen route. It is true that most major European cities have unattractive surroundings in the area of their main rail stations.

Emily, we could give you better advice is you would put your home area in your visible profile. It makes a difference if you live in a rural area, or in Los Angeles, for example.

RS Southern Italy tours stay in Naples and, although our guide pointed out a few streets the she avoided, we found plenty of regular life and commerce on the main streets. See this recent thread about the Naples airport. My flight was also at 7:00 and the taxi ride was no problem.
