Naples for a Few Hours

Just me again. When I thought everything was perfect my daughter said boy I’d like to see something of the Amalfi coast. Well, we’re staying in Trastevere and can get the train to Naples in the morning and arrive there about 10. Would leading there about to give us enough time to get a little look. Is it worth it? We could get back by 4:00 +/-. The next day we are off to Venice. I see RS has an audio tour. Maybe get some lunch. Need to make the train reservation this am USA time.

Naples is not generally what one thinks of as the Amalfi coast. Amalfi coast is a 50 mile stretch south of Naples

if you’re asking if you have time to take the train to Naples and then go to the Amalfi coast to be back to train station by four honestly I don’t think so. It’s basically a day to see the you aren’t giving yourself enough time.

That would give you time to see part of Naples, but I have a feeling that’s not what he is expecting. That’s a big city not a scenic coastline

Naples is a special place, but objectively, it's a gritty old city suffering from years of neglect by the northern-oriented government. If you watch history-based series TV, movies like That Hamilton Woman, or read the award winning novels of Elena Ferrante, there are plenty of things to see there. But Naples alone is not worth a day out from Rome. (Opinion.)

Have you considered Ostia or Tivoli?

I'll take the opposite of Tim. Naples is outstanding if for nothing else is that it will likely be so different from any city you've ever been to. However, it is not the Amalfi Coast. If you want that, I'd recommend a train to Salerno and then a ferry to Amalfi Town. But don't expect that to happen between 10 and 4. It will be a tight squeeze to do it in 12 hours.

Taking a trip to Amalfi from Naples is a whole day in-and-of-itself. It would be exhausting to do it from Rome, and you wouldn't have much time on the ground.

If you want to just see Napoli that is a different story. Gino E Toto Sorbillo had the best pizza I've ever had in my life!

Get an earlier train and spend the day in Naples.
It only takes 90 minutes or so for high speed ones.

I’ve been to the two famous pizza places there that everyone seems to rave about, found them way too busy, but last week we had even better pizza very near the Centrale train station in a restaurant called Gaetano Adamo.
OMG, I’ve never tasted better pizza anywhere in the world!

If it’s the Amalfi Coast she wants to see, Naples (or Sorrento, or Salerno) probably won’t satisfy her desire. That’s if she wants colorful towns scrambling up the slopes that rise from the shoreline.

However, Naples could be a nice daytrip on its own. As mentioned above, it’s Pizza Heaven. And if you’re not going to see Pompeii on that quickie visit, you can still see its recovered treasures in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

Naples is Crazy Town. Loud, raucus, gritty, grubby, delicious and dangerous (from the motorscooters, not from street crime). But it's an absolute blast. Best enjoyed at night, though, IMO. And a one-day visit can't really give you a chance to feel the city in all its brassy flair. Or so it seems to me, at any rate.

We loved spending three days and nights in Naples, staying in the Spanish Quarter, the heart of the city. And we loved getting the h$77 out of Naples at the end of our stay. Wouldn't have missed it for anything, though. It's completely unlike any other city I've ever visited.

I looked at your posting history and see that you have 9 days in Italy, exclusive of your two travel days..
https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy/comment-on-my-plan-plesse

In those 9 days, your plans include - or at one time included - Rome, Naples, Florence, Venice and a day trip to Chianti. And you’d like to see the Amalfi Coast. How much experience do you have traveling in Italy?

It’s a lot. Likely too much. I suggest you slow down and savor your time in two or three places, rather than chase about five or six. Look at RS and other guidebook itineraries for 9 days in Italy. Or focus on two you really want to enjoy and build one day side trips, like a wine tour in Chianti from Florence, or an Amalfi day trip from Naples, from those two. But four cities plus two side trips in 9 days for someone traveling by train over much of the length of the country is too much in my opinion.

Naples is not the Amalfi Coast. You could take the ferry from Naples but that’s another 2 1/2 hours. To be practical, you really do not have enough time to do this as a day trip from Rome.

Your day trip idea is not a good one. It is not worth it! Stay put and enjoy more in the Travestere area.
