My wife and I (healthy, adventurous seniors) are planning to go to Italy for 6 weeks in May-June. Suggestions on how many places to stay and where? We have been to Rome, Florence, Pisa and Venice twice already. Undecided about renting a car and whether to stay in cities or smaller towns
What do you like to do? Museums and history? Outdoor activities? Wine tours? Do you prefer to hop, around a lot or settle into one place for a week or more?
We like to see an occasional museum, short hikes, soak up local atmosphere, eat local cuisine and view the countryside. We don't want to be packing and moving every couple of days
Based on the current reports of crowds, could you go a bit earlier, such as April-May, and void the larger cities? You would then hopefully avoid the June heat. Review the posts under Italy here on the Forum, there are many useful insights.
Safe travels!

Sobering reading regarding having a car in Italy.
For June — the later the better — a week or more (we have stayed up to a month!) in the Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi could be lovely. Easy hikes, stunning vistas, a bit of Austria in Italy as the area was Austrian prior to WWI. No car needed although there are some agriturismi in the Alto Adige that might make for a fun stay.
Also in that region, Merano is a lovely small town, nice walks, a fabulous palace and garden, great vibe. No car necessary. Should be fine in May or June. It is lower in elevation so subject to more heat than much of the Alto Adige.
