So lovely I don’t even want to tell the name

Ok, I almost don’t even want to say the name of this place. I want to keep it a secret. Preserve its magic. Keep it from becoming over run like Cinque Terre.

I don’t think Rick mentions it much (thankfully?) but someone from this forum mentioned it (thank you!) and we took a chance. Boy, we were NOT disappointed.

We stayed in a lovely hotel (Hotel du Parc) which once was a private residence. The old charm abounds: glass chandeliers, wrought iron staircases, amazing carved ceilings in the common rooms. Yet the modern conveniences have been added: marble bathrooms, an elevator, a bar, air conditioning, parking, a fridge in the room, a wonderful extensive breakfast.

The hotel sits just above town, and our room had a view of the town, the lake, and the alps beyond. It is spectacular. We had clear, warm days and enjoying the view was just heaven. The lakefront is a 3 minute walk, assuming you don’t stop at the grocery, pharmacy, the town’s best gelato shop, a pastry shop or several gift shops along the way.

We heard very little English spoken by other visitors over two days of exploring. Lots of Italian and German. Some French, a few Brits. So I think it’s not yet on the American radar.

Can we keep it a secret? Just a little while longer? It’s obviously popular with Europeans, so I guess word will get out eventually. So here it is: Stresa. An absolute gem on Lake Maggiore. Dare I say it: I like it better than Varenna on Lake Como. Could easily spend a week here, exploring the various villages. I would move here in a heartbeat. Maybe my new favorite place in Europe.

Sorry, no secret here. Have seen it mentioned many times on this forum, in fact, I’m pretty sure it’s one of Jean’s favorites in Italy.

Glad you enjoyed it and we hope to get there someday soon!

Oh my! I read your post and immediately researched the hotel. It is a gem. Thank you for sharing the info. Maybe someday I can stay there. It's exactly the type of place my husband and I prefer. I bet you can't wait to return! I bet you didn't want to leave!

Always wanted to check it out as its a location in A Farewell to Arms, first book I read from Hemingway.

We stayed in Stesa on my first trip to Italy back in '97. Agree that it is lovely. Hope you were able to get out to the islands, they were the highlight for me, especially Isola Bella.

By the way, I just did a search on the forum for Stesa and got over 1200 hits. So it's not exactly a secret on here.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Yes, we went to the islands and I loved Isola Pescatori and the palace on Isola Bella. Definitely worth it.

I probably liked it more than Varenna because it’s more spread out and didn’t feel crowded. And I was in Varenna 20 years ago - I can’t imagine it now! Even though there are obviously lots of tourists in Stresa. Only on the islands are the streets crowded.

Yes. I'm pretty sure you're right Tammy! I think that is her chosen place to get over jet lag in Italy!

We went there many years ago, not a secret then either. The best secret on Lake Maggiore is Ranco. Closest to MXP. Friendd have relatives there and told us to visit.

Oh yes! Tammy & Pam are correct! I love Stresa! My favorite small hotel to stay the last night before heading to a different location is Boutique Elvezia Hotel which is on the small Isola Bella. ❤️

To answer Judy B’s question. Milan’s Malpensa airport is very handy, and there are direct small buses that go directly to Stresa without going to Milan, first. Check out Alibus.

Oh yes, he does and he's been writing about it for years. This is a great first base if flying into Milan’s Malpensa airport because you can take a direct bus to Stresa (1h 15m).

Definitely not a secret. I'm considering adding it to our trip next year & you may have just convinced me. It's hard for me to imagine it being better than Varenna. I so loved Varenna when I visited in May of 2019. I didn't find it crowded at all. Maybe May is off season?

So glad to read this! We have a Tauck tour booked for ‘24 that spends two nights there at Grand Hotel des Iles Borromees. Can’t wait!

Stress is not a secret. We stayed there years ago and at the hotel. Lovely hotel and town. Easy to get to from Malpensa airport.

It was the first destination using our GPS (remember them) to navigate to Stresa from the airport. My wife was not impressed when I purchased it just before the trip for close to$500. However she was quickly impressed when we drove to the hotel without a map.

Great city and location.

I was given a tip on this place from this forum and already picked out this hotel for our next trip, wanting to combine a Northern Italy and Switzerland (of course) trip. Our route will be Florence>Venice>Stresa>Switzerland. Glad to hear!

Kim and Nigel, I agree about "B", but it's also not totally a secret on the forum. It's been mentioned quite a bit. I'm still not giving it away though, they'll have to figure it out for themselves.

So glad to read about all the fabulous experiences in Stresa. We will be there mid September for 4 nights at an Airbnb overlooking the lake. Praying 3 full days will be ok. So many beautiful places. So little time.

Yes, Jean has spoken highly of Stresa here! I can't wait to go!

CaliMom, I said to myself the last night I was in Stresa in 2022 that it would probably be the last time. There’s just so many places to choose, and I have enjoyed it immensely on three trips.

I have a few locations that are an hour by train from Milano Centrale that deserve a return, too.
