Is there a way to view ItaliaRail train tickets on TrenItalia mobile App?

I was told that the TrenItalia mobile app was great to use, as it would provide the platform number and on time/late info prior to the board in the station. Also, it will tell the station prior to the one we want to get off at, so we can be ready to disembark. And, it will tell you the ultimate desitnation of the train, which is what will be on the board in the station.

When I downloaded the TrenItalia app, I can't find a way to enter the tickets we bought on Italia Rail as we don't have a CP number.

We have a PNR
We have a carriage #/seat #
We have an Italia Rail order #

But no CP number

Is it just impossible to view the tickets bought on ItaliaRail on TrenItalia's app?

Is it even worth it to use the TrenItalia App?

Hope this makes sense.

I had the same issue. If you bring up the actual tickets, not the QR Code, then you will see it on the right side next to the seat assignments. You enter that into the Trentalia app. You will see it under saved tickets. The tickets you purchase from Trentalia are visible under tickets.

If you can find the ticket, then contact Italia Rail, they will resend it to you.

Why not just purchase directly from Trenitalia?

ItaliaRail a third party reseller

it is a very good app.

what it won't do is show you any trips on the (in my mind better) competitor Italo Treno. But no probs, they have an excellent app too....

On the board in the station, trains are listed by departure time and code: you don't need to know the final destination of each train.

The list of all intermediate stops will be scrolling on big departure boards and on the smaller ones hanging over each track, but you can simply make a search and click the grey " i " on trenitalia.com to learn in advance this kind of stuff.

Thanks all. I called ItaliaRail customer service toll free number. There were very nice and helpful.
Turns out they don't automatically send out the train tickets these days, so we didn't have actual tickets. We only had emailed confirmations with PNR #'s and QR codes.

They were able to give me the CP codes over the phone for most of our train trips, so I was able to add most of our train trips to the TrenItalia App. They also were able to email me the actual tickets. Interestingly, only the express trains have the CP codes printed on the tickets. Regional trains tickets with CP codes don't list the CP Code on the actual ticket. Very strange.

Some of the regional trains have CP codes and some don't. Again very strange. If there isn't a CP code for a specific journey, which I was told was a Trenitalia decision, I was told there is no way to add that train trip to the Trenitalia app.

As for the question of why we purchased train tickets on ItaliaRail vs directly from Trenitalia, the answer is that everything I read said the Trenitalia web site was difficult to navigate in English and it was a much better option to use ItaliaRail. ItaliaRail was super easy. I haven't booked any tickets directly on Trenitalia, so can't speak from personal experience if that is harder. I just went by the advice on many blogs/websites.

Thank you everyone. I guess, I should have just called ItaliaRail before posting, but hopefully this helps someone else.

Adding to end - hopefully some guidance. I know I'll be taking the train and will be doing a deep dive this weekend; however, maybe a popcorn trail from the gallery?

I'm going from Venice to Florence
Then Florence to Sorrento
Then Sorrento to Rome

Would all these intercountry travels be via the train you are discussing and using ItaliaRail (if it is easier to navigate via english)?

TrenItalia is the government run train line in Italy. You can book all your train tickets on ItaliaRail, which is authorized seller for TrenItalia, or directly on Trenitalia.
Express trains in Italy are are also offered by a private company called Italo.

You can save very modest amounts of money on the ItaliaRail booking fees if you book all your tickets at once. Only thing to know, is that the tickets you select are held for 12 or 15 minutes, so if you take a long time researching then they start expiring. I would suggest doing research in advance on Rome to Rio or Italia Rail, then purchasing all at once when you know what you want.

As for viewing on TrenItalia App ... my guess is the locations you are going to/from will have CP codes and thus you can enter your journeys into the Trenitalila app. The ones where we don't have CP codes are between small towns heading into and in the Appenines, so a bit off the beaten track.

Where I'm hoping the Trenitalia app comes in handy, is in looking up platform #'s in advance for when we have tight connections. That way, all we have to do is run to the correct platform vs decipher a partenze board and then try to still run to the correct platform.

Griffin, you can book intra Italy tickets on Trenitalia. You just need to use the Italian city names, ie Venezia S Lucia for Venice, Firenze for Florence, etc. Just be sure to choose the right depot. It's very easy. No need to use a third party ticket seller and pay their fee. If you want to book online instead of the app, here's the English version of the website https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples are served by both competing railway companies: trenitalia.com and italotreno.it

Feel free to pay more and use a reseller's site like ItaliaRail. The reason trenitalia.com uses only Italian stations names is that you won't see Rome, Venice and Florence written anywhere on boards and monitors.

Even if the Partenze boards are bilingual and do not actually need to be deciphered, they never translate city and station names.

The trains between Naples and Sorrento are run by a local company called Circumvesuviana. It's a suburban train with no reserved seats and no online bookings.

is run to the correct platform

These days I wouldn't run inside a station without a reason.

What are CP codes ?

Cambio prenotazione = booking change.

Two items Trenitalia uses to identify train tickets are PNR and CP codes.
PNR is Booking Code
CP is booking change code

The ItaliaRail booking fees are quite low.
I booked 4 separate rail journeys all at one time and paid one US $5.00 booking fee for all 4 (across mostly regional trains, but one journey also included a leg on an express train)
Earlier I had booked 2 express train journeys as 2 separate bookings. Each of those bookings had a US$3.50 booking fee.
So for a 26 day trip including 6 train journeys the total booking fees were $12.00. Small potatoes compared to the total cost of our vacation to have peace of mind that I booked everything correctly.

Both the Trenitalia site and app are super simple to use

I don’t get it

Knowing the platform numbers well in advance is fine in theory, until those numbers are changed at short notice for some reason. Always check the actual platform numbers on arrival, to avoid going to the wrong platform.
That advice applies in any country.

I don't get it too. IIRC, there are no booking fees on trenitalia.

Okay, piggybacking here - not sure if this is worth a new topic but it is somewhat related.

1) With respect to transportation to the train from hotel - is it predominantly taxi or does Uber/Lyft operate in Italy?
2) If taxi predominantly, do they take credit cards or should I bring Euros with me - a follow-up regardless of this question, if I'm in Italy for 15 days - I assume I should get a certain amount of Euro from the bank for this trip - what do people recommend for window-shopping, picking up biscotti, etc..I assume CCs can be used in most (but not all restaurants). Is 3000 EURO seem fine and assuming I can go to some of the larger national banks and tap into the ATM? (Or more?)
3) My father was a careeer Marine so one his mantras - if you are on time you are late and if you are early you are on time. I want to be early for anything/everything so in that vein - how hard to flag down/schedule transportation? How accurate or train times? Should I essentially add 20 minutes to anything in terms of getting somewhere on time (to say what phone navigation says)
4) Is there an app that is more accurate with respect to navigation/time (typically use Google Maps).

I'll take your first question...

no, there is no Uber as you know it, or other similar. Taxis. Period. The Uber app does work but it goes through to a taxi company who provide the service - the app only provides the reservations.

Uber Black is the the only Uber permitted. That is a black limo service with professional uniformed drivers. Expect $$$$.

Since you're apparently just starting out it far better to have your thread. That way you get the notifications of answers instead the original poster of the thread, who now gets all your notifications, which they may enjoy or otherwise. And it allows helpers to keep one question in mind instead of answering various folks at the same time....

Back to your first question - I've never taken a taxi in Italy. There has always been a bus or vaporetto (waterbus in Venice) or my own feet. I've always been perfectly happy on Rome buses, Florence buses, CT trains, Amalfi bus and boat, Pisa feet, Siena feet. Venice vaporetto, other places my own car.
