I came on here to browse for similar info. Rick Steves tours recommend Travel Guard trip insurance, which I've used previously, but after reading over their Covid info, it is not clear that they cover Covid related expenses if you get stuck in a foreign country with a positive Covid test and have to isolate for 10 or more days before you can get on a plane back to the US.
Generali Travel Insurance. All three policies offered cover testing positive for Covid and having to stay longer with hotels, meals and rescheduling return flights.
This recent post might be helpful:
There have been lots of threads about travel insurance over the past year. Use the "search" function, then drill down to "forum" and narrow further by choosing "6 months". You will get a lot of info and opinions. You can also search insuremytrip.com and squaremouth.com. Read the policies carefully. The devil is in the details and "legalese" wording.
I just received an email from Allianz clarifying their coverage for Covid 19 related expenses. I'll quote a key section below.
"for a temporary period in response to the ongoing public health and travel crisis, we are currently accommodating claims for:
Under Emergency Medical Care Benefit: Emergency medical care for a customer who becomes ill with COVID-19 while on their trip.
Under Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption Benefits: Trip cancellation and trip interruption if a customer becomes ill with COVID-19 either before or during their trip.
Customers who become ill with COVID-19 while on their trip will not be subject to the Trip Interruption benefit's five-day maximum limit for additional accommodation and transportation expenses (however, the maximum daily limit for such expenses and the maximum Trip Interruption benefit limit still apply).
Please note, to confirm COVID-19 illness, we require a physician's diagnosis or confirmation, or the verified record of a positive molecular (e.g. PCR) or antigen COVID-19 test performed by a third party testing service provider."
Hello - We bought Berkshire Hathaway Exactcare. It got good reviews and was able to easily get someone on the phone to discuss the questions I had. It cost use $284 for $10,000 worth of coverage including 7 days of trip interruption that would cover quarantine. Whatever you end up getting, I recommend buy directly from the policy holder i.e. Berkshire, Nationwide, etc. There are a lot of insurance resellers that are just selling the underwriters policy. I have read unfavorable reviews of 3rd party customer service or claims handling.
Thank you all for the advice. We ended up with Allianz insurance.
