Ideal place to stay in Rome! Neighborhood and Hotel Recommendations

Hello Forum,

I am struggling a bit on where to stay in Rome. A relative said to stay nowhere but Trestevere as that is "thee" place to stay. After looking at many of the hotels...they all see to be small and rooms versus hotel. We want to be in the center of everything where walking is possible to main sights but at the same time...we want a nice hotel. We are use to updated "new" hotels with comfortable beds and roomy bathrooms since there will be 4 of us in the family. We dont want want old and run down. As soon as I find something on trip advisor...I come across R more negative review than positive. Please help

"stay nowhere but Trestevere as that is "thee" place to stay."

That's silly. While Trastevere is certainly a good area to stay, it's hardly the only suitable location for a visitor.

Given that you want a certain kind of hotel, start with that, then ask here if the location is going to be a problem. Some of the more "modern" hotels are not near the center. Also, some of the hotels in the center, with the style you are seeking, will cost a fortune. What is your budget?

I prefer staying in the triangle of Piazza Navona/Campo dei Fiori/Pantheon for convenience for walking. We usually rent apartments, but the Palazzo Olivia is right around the corner from the Piazza Navona and has a great 2 bedroom apartment with 2 modern baths. This is kind of a cross between a hotel and an apartment. They are staffed part of the day and include breakfast at the restaurant attached to their lobby. Beds were great, and there's even a tiny lift. The biggest problem may be getting a reservation. Their name turns up often on this site.

You seem to desire an American chain hotel because its what you are used to.

Search the Internet for Hilton's, Shreatons, etc. I noticed your similar post Included the word luxury. If you aren't on a limited budget then consider the Grand Hotel Palace.

Otherwise understand smaller rooms are often the norm in European travel.

I had posted the same question as we will be in Rome in August. Someone suggested the Beehive to me. It looks like a nice place and the owners have corresponded with me promptly when I had questions. Linda is also available for a tour and they do cooking classes We are booked for 2 nights there and I am very much looking forward to it. If you look on their FB page Rick Steves did a funny video with Lindas daughters a few years back. Happy Traveling http://www.the-beehive.com/

If I have any questions about Rome, I go to RonInRome.com. He covers virtually every detail about visiting this great city.
When we were in Rome last month, we stayed about 500 yards east of the Vatican--literally down the street. The Ottavaino "San Pietro" underground stop was 5 stops from Roma Termini--easy to get to. I also like the neighborhood around the Pantheon, however it's more expensive to stay in.

We stayed at the well-located Hotel Nazionale...right near the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain area. It was modern and lovely inside. We booked the least expensive room - a Classic room, and it was beautiful. http://www.hotelnazionale.it/en/4-star-hotel-rome/. When we stayed there this April, our room was 142 Euros per night, pre-paid, with breakfast.

I second the suggestion for Cross-pollinate.com. We have used them exclusively in Rome and other cities. We prefer the small local type accommodations but there are plenty of high end places and the customer service is great.

The OP leaves for Italy this Monday so I'm guessing she's booked accommodations by now.

There are several threads by this same OP asking pretty much the same thing over and over and who doesn't appear to go back and read the responses. As pointed out, she's headed out the door to Italy, so it's kind of pointless to be asking these questions now.
