Hi, traveling with 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 8 & 10) - have never been. looking for a hotel that is on the canal and centrally located.

Perhaps if you would share why nothing in the above thread met your needs, I could be more helpful.
Which canal? There are dozens of canals. The Grand Canal is very busy and can be noisy.
We like the Hotel Ai Mori D'Oriente, and they do have some suites that sleep four.
Have a great trip!
Stayed at Pensione Guerrato while on a Rick Steves tour a couple years ago. Near the market in a quieter area but also not far from the Rialto Bridge so very central. They have some family rooms and offer a nice breakfast.
The more affordable lodgings are in the area near the main train station. Some nice B&Bs there.
if you have 2 identical threads running the people answering can get confused, and you may misplace an answer
You might try staying at a convent/monastery ! most will have a 4 bed room. Check on monasterystays.com, but you can save by booking direct. I stay at Istituto San Guiseppe, located on a canal midway between Rialto and San Marco
Thanks, All. Apologies for 2 separate threads. After searching, I realized I would like a hotel on the grand canal or a nice smaller canal so that was the distinction. I am not sure if that is possible, but I think the kids would love that aspect, so narrowing my search to accommodate that. Any recommendations would be appreciated!
Hi Mac, the hotel that I like to use in Venice wouldn’t be a good choice for your criteria, but put your dates in Booking.com. Filter on ratings, etc. Then pull up the map, and you can see which ones are on the Grand Canal or other main canals you’re wanting to consider.
One comment- I’ve stayed in Venice several times. The amount of time I spend in the hotel is so small vs. the time being outside enjoying Venice. You might want to consider if an easier, less expensive option would be adequate and spend your time & money on memorable activities or outdoor restaurants at preferred locations while there in this unique city.
Agree with Jean
Venice is nothing but canals so staying on the Grand Canal doesn’t seem necessary to enjoy Venice
Many hotels are located on smaller quiet canals where you’ll see the gondolas passing by
Traffic along the Grand Canal is pretty hectic-think of it as the Interstate of Venice
Other canals are the backroads
Use Booking. Com and Google maps to target locations

Thank you all. Jean, what hotel do you prefer? I agree about finding a hotel on any side canal. I am just overwhelmed with the choices and have no idea how to picture it. I was looking at Hotel L'Orologiio, Palazzo Veniziano as my current top two. But also Hotel Ai More D'Oriente or Hotel La Calcina. Any suggestions are helpful. thank you.
based on your most recent discussions I can suggest three places (among several) that I have stayed at very happily and which one way and another meet what I think you may be after. I will say that I don't know any of the ones you mentioned just now.
It would help if we had an idea of your price point, what you consider "central" and what amenities are essential, and if any of the family is mobility challenged...
but not knowing that, here we go...
Centrally located as in at the foot of the Rialto Bridge and next to the open air Fish Market, a few moments walk from the Rialto Mercato vaporetto stop and while not on the Grand Canal you could hit it with a gently tossed stone - Pensione Guaratto. No elevator. Mid to lower price point. Great folks. I dropped my laptop off the the sink in the bathroom and it lived to tell the tale with only a slight snapping sound in the hinge. Another time had a bigger room overlooking the piazza. Loved the views. A little noisy on Friday night, but didn't keep us awake. Pretty good brekkie. Well liked here on the Forums and RS used to take tours there. Don't know if they still do - we always travel independently and never any issue (except once in Mürren in Switzerland when the early breakfasters wanted us to join them for breakfast).
Hotel Ala is about 100 feet down a flat straight alley from the Giglio vaporetto stop just one or two stops from San Marco on the Grand Canal. There is a side canal which went past our window one time and we got to participate in the gondola rides passing by. Shut the window, no issue, when we wanted to sleep - lovely. Excellent breakfast. Easy walk to S. Moise and onwards into S Marco by what used to be the AMEX office. An easy walk the other direction to La Fenice. Similar price point to Pensione Guaratto or a little higher. For me a very good place to stay.
Right on the Grand Canal with great views from the Breakfast Room but perhaps not actually the bedrooms, and on the top floor of a small palazzo so you're a bit vertically away from the water. Ca' Angeli is not terrifically close to either Rialto or S. Marco being near S. Silvestro vaporetto stop (to get an idea, here are their walking directions: "when you get off at the San Silvestro boat stop going straight on (except for one small jog left and right) you will reach “Campo San Aponal ” (a square, with a church and a well in the middle), turn left and take the little street called “Calle de mezo” (there’s a bookshop called “Giunti” on the corner before that street) go through this street till the end and you will arrive in another little square called “Campiello Meloni“; after about 20 metres you should see a Pastry shop (“Rizzardini”) on your left. Turn left at the pastry shop into Calle del Forno, then turn right then left, and after 10 metres you will be at Ca’ Angeli (Please ring the bell on the left, close to our doorplate)."
Ca' Angeli has a great atmosphere, a single lift or stairs (never had any problem), off the beaten path, only a few rooms, great staff, lovely brekkie, and a price point to reflect that. But does it meet your needs, wants and desires?
If your price point is significantly higher than mine, I can point you to places my parents used to love but at which I have never actually stayed.
Hope this helps a bit....
Mac, book directly, but read the reviews on booking.com
I've found them to be accurate, and only folks who have stayed in the hotels can post there, unlike other sites.
Good luck!
We always stay at Hotel Ala and will again this fall
Their website says somewhere “adults only” now but I don’t think that’s really the case
They used to have family rooms that slept 4
Book directly with them for a great rate and deal on their very good bkft
If that doesn’t work out
Hotel Bel Sito is in the same quiet campo with the same super easy access

I’ve stayed at Hotel Ala multiple times, including plans this Fall. I don’t think I’ve seen children there during any of my trips, though.
I hope I don’t confuse you more. We are currently in Venice and staying in the Dorsoduro district at Hotel Agli Alboretti. We love this hotel and we love Dorsoduro. It’s so much quieter than St Mark’s square, San Marco, Rialto Bridge area and the train station area. We are a 1 minute walk from Accademia Bridge, which means the grand canal is right there. About a 5 minute walk from Guidecca Canal which is gorgeous. I am sad we are leaving tomorrow.
I don’t know if they have family rooms but it might be worth checking. They have a small elevator. A nice breakfast and a lovely patio.
Agree with @kmkwoo on Dorsoduro area. We stayed at Hotel American Dinesen and it was fantastic (including breakfast). It's a very short walk to the Accademia and to Guggenheim. You're maybe three minutes from a vaporetto station that gets you to St. Mark's and Doge's Palace on a short ride. It saved us a lot of money by purchasing a 72 hour vaporetto pass; the individual rides aren't cheap. Also best to take a gondola ride away from the choppy Grand Canal. Can't remember the name of the side canal, but it was in the St. Mark's area with gondolas right outside the Hard Rock Cafe, if that helps at all. Have fun!
Thanks, All! I think after all my searching and your grand advice, I am leaning towards Hotel Saturnia, Palazzo Veneziano or Hotel LaCalcina. If anyone has specific thoughts/recs on these choices, I would welcome them! :)
