Hi, we have two kids, ages 8 & 10. Looking for recommendations on where to stay in Venice.
The RS Guidebook to Venice is full of pertinent intel regarding Venice and the various neighborhoods.
No, don’t work for RS, merely pointing out how helpful the guidebook would be.
Any "Sestiere" (neighborhood or 1/6 of the ancient city) will work, except for Giudecca, which is across from the Giudecca canal and less convenient. Everything is within walking distance.
For a family you may be better off with an apartment (check VRBO or AirBnB)
hey hey mac
more info needed to help you out. when is this trip, how many days, any amenities needed /wanted, budget in euros? are you flying in from USA and transportation to whichever hotel you choose? if traveling during summer high season, will be very crowded/busy, reserve tickets online for any attractions/activities you're planning.
be careful when booking hotels, check-in is 2-4pm and check-out is 10-11am, unless you get an early check-in if flight gets in early. pack light, can your group carry their own bags, rooms are usually small look for a family room, how many beds (sofa beds are small & short, don't like them). as claudia mentions RS guidebook for venice has great info

put in filters, see something you like, contact hotel with an email to ask questions and book direct. lots of stairs/steps, bridges, cobblestones/uneven pavement. staying in st marks square and rialto bridge gets very busy & i feel more expensive, we have stayed in san polo, canareggio, across train station. good luck and have a great time.

These hotels/apartments will be able to accommodate your family:

I just recommended this long-running family-owned Venetian hotel on another thread, for someone looking for a hotel to accommodate his family of four. It's in one of the prime neighborhoods of the city, away from the mobs of San Marco and they have two categories of room for a family of four.
It's one of the loveliest hotels I've stayed at in Venice; it's not super luxury but it's warm, homey and beautiful.
It's rated three stars (if I am remembering correctly, but I'm sure you know that stars have much less correlation to quality in Italy than they do in the US). Your only problem would be finding a room during your dates:
We're traveling with a 12 year and we booked here https://www.palazzoveneziano.com/?utm_medium=organic&utm_source=GB
Fairly priced, on the canal so easy taxi vaporetto access.
