Looking for a clean decent hotel in Rome under $300 a night, near coliseum/forum. Is there such a thing? It's for a pre-cruise trip and only need 1 night.
Something in the Monti neighborhood could work well for you. It's between the Colosseum/Forum and Roma Termini station. I've stayed at the Hotel Canova in that area. My first room was on the top floor (5th, I think), and there was a significant issue with hot-water pressure when showering; no problem at all once I moved down to a lower floor. I did report the issue in Feb 2023, and I assume it has been addressed long before now. Otherwise, perfectly OK 3-star hotel. I didn't take breakfast, so I know nothing about that.
We have not stayed at the Hotel Lancelot, but we have reserved it for this coming December. It is recommended in the RS Italy guidebook and his tour groups stay there. We are paying @ $165 for our room which also includes the breakfast. It is family owned and operated. Every time that I have emailed, I have received a quick, thorough and polite response. The Colosseum is a 10-15 minute walk. My fingers are crossed that it is as good as it sounds. There are others on this forum who have stayed there and liked it. Type in the name of the hotel in the search bar. This is the most current link: https://community.ricksteves.com/travel-forum/italy-reviews/i-love-hotel-lancelot-in-rome
We stayed at Hotel Lancelot in December 2023, on a Rick Steves Rome tour. I thought the hotel was fine and compared favorably to other hotels I’ve stayed in when visiting Rome.
We stayed at Lancelot during our RS tour. It was nice, great breakfast. When are you going? Prices are higher for 2025 because of the jubliee, however, we'll be their in February and I found a few places with reasonable rates.
Why that neighborhood? If going on a cruise it would make a lot more sense if you stayed in the Termini area just for the convenience to transportation. There are other neighborhoods I would stay in other than the Coliseum.
Thanks all we have reserved our room at Hotel Lancelot for October 2025.
We chose that neighborhood, because we are wanting to be near the colosseum for a dinner view the night before our cruise. We are traveling with 5 other couples for the cruise, many have not been to Rome before, so we will prob. meet up with them near the Forum/Colesseum.
Thanks for your help!
I stayed at the Hotel Lancelot on a Rick Steves tour in October (2024). It was clean and well-run. The receptionist kindly let me practice my rudimentary Italian, the breakfasts were great, and I had some dinners there too (but no Coliseum view from their dining room). There is a coffee place (called a bar) nearby, as well as a hardware store and a pharmacy. And of course a gelateria. You'll have a great time.
