Great Dinner Restaurant Near Roma Termini?

Hello Community,

Any recommendations for a good restaurant for dinner near Roma Termini? We are a family with a toddler spending 1 day in Rome in June. We are coming to Rome on the first morning train from Florence, and will need to take the train back to Florence. I know Italians eat dinner late. Would you recommend taking the latest train possible (9 pm) from Roma Termini back to Florence in order to have a better dinner experience (6:30-8:30 pm) vs (5-7 pm) in Rome? We're mindful that this will be a long, hectic day. But we also know that Rome in June is most pleasant early in the am and late in the evening.

Thanks so much!

We stayed one night near Termini Station last June 6, it was a Monday. We walked to Ristorante "Al Viminale", Piazza del Viminale, Rome. It was about 10-15 minutes stroll from the station, not sure if that's too far with a toddler. We ate relatively early, maybe 7pm? and sat outside (their out door dining is actually across the street from the restaurant). We had a very nice, relaxing meal with only one or two other tables full at the same time, i.e. there would be plenty of room for a stroller at the table. My sister actually joined us about an hour after we got there, and the waiter was perfectly happy to have her order something and we just sat and chatted, no rush. I remember the food was good, I can't remember anything outstanding or bad, but it was a pleasant evening aways from the crowds.

Can your toddler tolerate your later night dining back in Florence which is still early for Italy, even though assuming the baby will be fed earlier? I assume your child will have had such a full day without a nap that you may be stretching it.

5-7pm in Rome is very early for dining. Maybe get take out and eat on the train.

Last year we enjoyed dinner at Terme di Diocleziano, Viminale 3A.

I don’t have my review close at hand; I’ll post a link to it tomorrow. I will say we ate there twice, enjoying the food, the staff, and the setting.

When I find the report I posted, I’ll come back and post a link.

Every time we are coming or going through Termini, we eat at the Mercato Centrale Roma —- it’s actually inside the station and, since it is made up of lots of different places to eat, you can walk around, order anything that looks good to you, and take it all back to any table. As far as I know, everything is available all day long, so you can eat whenever you want or need to. And it’s fast but not “fast food” or train station food. It’s fun. And the bathrooms are nice.

If you weren’t needing to take a train back to Florence that evening, I’d have several other restaurant recommendations, especially a bit south of Termini station in the Testaccio neighborhood. But you ask about a “better dinner experience.” How much better will things for your toddler, and will that influence how good an experience it’ll be for the rest of the family? Earlier will make everybody happier in the end, I suspect.

Italy’s not Spain. And dinner at 5:00 vs. 6:30 doesn’t quite mean you’re having dinner while everyone else is just finishing lunch. But if you want an actual Italian place, and aren’t counting on a 3-hour meal lasting well past dark, you still have options close to Termini. Last fall, I stayed at the Deco Roma UNO hotel, 2 short blocks southwest of Termini. There was a decent restaurant just across the street, at Via Giovanni Amendola 26. They had tables on the sidewalk, but it was less hectic inside. Their gelato was fantastic, by the way. I couldn’t have told you the name, and there’s no big name signage out front, other than simply “Pizzeria, Bar-Gelato, and “Ristorante” and looking it up just now, I’m surprised that Google Maps says it’s “King Food Termini.” Not a stellar name, but the food’s good, it’s super convenient, and they’re open 24 hours, as could be expected from a place a 3 minute walk from a European capital train station. If you’re looking for an intimate Roman dining experience, there are other places on the street, but consider dining here.

I think it will be not so easy to find a great dinner restaurant in Rome if you have to get back to Termini for a 9 PM train. Few good restaurants (as opposed to cafes, etc.) seem to open before 7 PM, and 7:30 PM is not at all unusual.

The Mercato Centrale inside Termini does have some intriguing options. The difficulty can be in finding a place to sit.
